Prop seal leak (repair question)
#1
Ok so I just got my boat. I had the 1990 150 hp force rebuilt, and NOW the gear oil is white. How much more money can it cost???? I did hear you when you guys said that getting a boat is like sitting in the bath tub ripping up $20 dollar bills and throwing them away. But I didn't want to listen. Oh well, I have to throw it away on something so it might as well be on something that I enjoy. I was wondering if I should get a seal kit and fix the seals myself or if it is a very difficult job. I have the manual and it shows the process, but I read some posts and they said it would take a seal puller to get them out, and the pullers were expensive. Also should I take the boat over and have it pressure tested to see if it is the seals that are leaking? I am new to this and don't know much about boats. I hope you guys can help. If not I noticed that some of you do repairs on the side. If so what would you charge to fix it? Thanks Wiper24

those seals arent to bad to change. I'm really busy right now with work so I couldn't be alot of help right now but I wouldn't be afraid to dig into that as long as you have a diagram.

I can relate. Boats are a money pit. Seems like they're broken more than they're fixed.

I used to do a lot of my own work, including in the lower unit. Try going to a library and getting a manual for your motor. The SL County used to have a pretty good stock of repair manuals. Then I would look at what you need to do and see if you can do it yourself. Look closely at what special tools you absolutely need. The idea here is to determine up front if this is something you can do or if you should take it to a pro. It just might save a lot of time and money in the long run and wont' cost a dime up front.
