Decided to do my community service today and take one of our senior citizens fishing. Eric and I had been planning this trip for some time and our main goal was to get Eric a 10" TARP rock bass (google eye). Today was the day.
Put the boat in at 7 AM to about a million cfs flow rate. Water was about 2-3 feet higher than last week. Headed downtown and started fishing a rip rap bank (duh) throwing topwater and spinnerbait. Did not take long to switch over to the old pig n jig and when we did we started ripping them. The fish of the day was a 5.6 lb spawned out largemouth that I got on the jig. Very nice fish with a bloody tail. We got two more keeper LM and our best 3 would have went around 10-10.5 lbs. I also got two nice drum (13 lber and a 9 lber) and Eric battled a huge drum for a while before it took him in some brush and broke him off. Probably 15+ lbs based on the fight. We each got a smallie and a few google eyes and a couple of redbreasts on the pig n jig.
We decided to try for some redbreast and we found two areas about the size of a bath tub that held fish. We were using crappie jigs on light line and had a ball. Ended up boating 30, with only 3 under 8". The biggest was a fat 9.75 incher Eric got on a pig n jig emoScratch.
Great day to be on the water, just wish the current was lower so we could have gotten more google eyes. They were there, but the current make it nearly impossible to fish for them. Eric knows where and what to do now to catch them and I have a feeling he will be back down there later this week and next week to get some.
Numbers for the day were 7 largemouth, 2 smallies, 36 spots, 2 drum, 30 redbreasts and 11 google eyes. 88 fish in the boat in 5 hours. Not too bad. Water temp was 67.5-68 degrees.
Thanks for riding with me today Eric, it was a blast.
(Eric will be posting pics later of the big LM and drum)
