Fished the E. Brainerd Lumber Tourney yesterday with Jay Jones. Aside from getting to the ramp late emoRolleyes , we started off pretty well with the first keeper in the boat at 0645. The second keeper was in at 0650 with some shorts in between. emoThumbsup And then it happened! Jay sets the hook and says HAWG! And it was...when it rolled up about 5 yards out, a conservative estimate would be 7lbs + but probably pushing 8 as it still had a huge pre-spawn belly! While I'm standing beside him with the net ready, the fish makes a run to the back corner of the boat and couldn't have been 4 ft down when....SNAP! His knot broke and she was gone! emoVomit Thank God there were no Sunday school classes or small children around to hear the conversation that took place! emoBig
Anyway after calming down, we continued to catch fish and had a limit early.
We caught them on lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and texas rigged plastics all day but had trouble getting any real good ones and were culling just ounces. Most of our fish were in the 5-10 ft of water range. Several spots we had planned to fish were just impossible due to the gale force winds! All the fish we caught were really healthy and even the small ones fought really hard.
We ended up with 13.87 I think and about 13th or 14th place? Chris Coleman and Chris Grizzle won with 23+. Had we(JAY) landed that fish early, we would have been up in the money good and also would have had an extra $250 big fish hour! It still was not the big fish of the tourney as one guy had a 9+lber! I only mentioned the fish breaking off to Jay about 1500 times throughout the day and have texted him this morning. emoLaugh If you know him, please don't mention his pattented LDR(LongDistanceRelease) technique to him! emoEvil It was still a fun day but the wind really hurt us where it seemed to help some. Also, congrats to the Legends anglers today!
