Memorial Weekend at Mead
#1
We spent Sunday night and Monday morning near Callville. I took two big carp just before sunset. Now that I know how to target them, Carp don't bother me as much. Standing out there at the lake over the years, watching them jump on the surface while not catching anything has gone on for too long! So I pulled the sardine off the hook and baited up some corn.

A friend hooked up the the smaller one on corn/sardine. (bottom in photo)

After sunset we caught two dink stripers and a nice 3-4lb cat on sardines (no pics). Then the action died off completely until just before sunrise.

At that point I took two largemouth bass on a shad pattern rapala crankbait. The first was about 16" and the second was nearly 20". The camera died so I had to take a grainy cellphone pic of the biggun bucketmouth.

The carp and LMB were a new and exciting experience for me. I'm going to start using my heavier rigs for the carp since they tend to be bigger

looks like one of the carp may have passed away due to lung cancer from smoking ciggs. My guess the carp were left for the coyotes. They look like they were sitting on the shore for a while in the picture.

The Carp were prepared according to an old family recipe passed down to me by my dearly departed Uncle.

Ingredients:
Whole fresh Carp, gutted
Beach Sand
2 lengths of 2" x 4" per fish (as long or slightly shorter than fish)
Coat-hanger or Wire
Half a cigarette
Salt & Pepper

Preparation

After gutting the carp, lay them in beach sand on each side and get a good coating. This is to reduce slime. Then take a lit cigarrette and place it in the fishes mouth. This is to impart a smoky flavor and to remind the fish one last time of lazy days eating cig butts at the marina.
You then take each carp and place it between two lengths of 2" x 4", wrapping them with the hanger or wire to secure the wood pieces to the carp. You then place each prepared carp into or over your fire pit or bbq. Allow at least 30 minutes of cooking time. Use a splash of water to keep the flames from completely burning the 2x4's. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. After the 30 to 45 minutes of cooking has elapsed start checking the fish to see if the flesh has become firm. Once you are confident that the fish is fully cooked, remove them from the heat/fire.

Serving:
Gently unwrap the wire from the wood/fish and discard the wire. You then take each piece of wood and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Throw the Carp back on the beach and then eat the 2x4's.

DELICIOUS!!!!!!

Erawk,

Funny...whenever I go fishing for carp, if I catch something else like a striper, catfish, SMB, etc. I just throw those on the bank to die too. I mean, hey...if they're not the fish that I personally am fishing for, then nobody else must like fishing for them either, so really I'm doing everyone a favor by killing off the nuisance fish like bass and catfish so everyone can catch more carp! I'm just doing my part to help Mead become a great carp fishery...

Your ignorance and selfishness is apalling...

Just because you think there are too many of whatever fish in Mead, doesn't mean you can play Captain Conservation, and kill off whatever species you deem insignificant or undesirable. There are other people who like to fish for different things you know...might help if you think about someone besides yourself every once in a while.

And don't give me the "there are tons of carp in Lake Mead and they eat everything and make the water clarity poor" bull****. The same can be said for the estimated 15 f***ing million stripers out there too.

It's people like you who make our natural resources so f***ing s***ty out here. You're probably the guy who goes to FLSP or Mead at the trout plants, and catches 20 or 30, and takes them ALL home to "eat", right after throwing your old fishing line and beer cans on the bank because let's face it, you're not fishing there anymore, so who gives a s**t, right? . It's no wonder the lakes and rivers around here are in the state they're in...

Thanks for trying to destroy what I enjoy doing...I appreciate it you f***ing ***hole.

WOW!!!! Looks to me like Nevada needs a new Moderator if he is going to slam someone for fishing. I think you guys need to look into that.

Well Tom,

You've got me all wrong. I haul out all of my trash and fishing line. Your assumptions and implications are unfair and untrue.

There are no limits on Carp for a reason. What I choose to do with them is my prerogative. I'm no threat to the Carp population at Lake Mead.

Most people seemed to enjoy my story. It was a JOKE about eating Carp.

Calling me names is pretty low for a moderator to stoop. Perhaps if you hadn't let your emotions take over you could have made me look like the ******. But instead, you do.

I don't care what state your in, posts like that will kill this board. What are you thinking? BFT and Nevada need to pull your mod status and ban you from the site.

Yeah, I was still trying to figure out who TOMSTONERADIO was when he jumped in the forum with 15 posts, and then became the moderator all of a sudden... I mean, good for you for taking the initiative- and I respect the point he is trying to get across, but ERAWK is right.

You've got quite a big set of balls to slam a dude for killing 3 carp. You should have seen DAN79 before you showed up Tom- he would go carp fishing and catch 20 or 30 fish, and leave 'em to die- those were impressive pictures.

Now Tom- Would you slam a dude for LEGALLY spear-fishing for carp? Do you know that the regulations state that spearfishing is legal, and there is no limit on carp? I see no difference.

You may have your staunch opinions, but YOU sir, are the a$$hole here. You should talk s**t to the guy that disregards state regulations, or the guys that hits on your lady in front of you, or the guy that spills your beer intentionally; but you have no right (as a moderator? Where's the dignity?) to have public diarrhea of the mouth.

You let me know when the carp population at Mead is less than sufficient, and then maybe your argument may have some bearing. Until then, lets keep the mud-flinging to a minimum...

I'm asking around on the main forum to see what moderator requirements and duties are to provide to potential candidates. I searched but didn't come up with any info, so chime in if you know.

Having read many of his quality posts and having benefited from his input and advice, I hereby nominate TheWhizzle for Nevada Moderator.

15 million stripers???? WOW! what the heck am i doin wrong ? i have trouble catching just one lol...alll kidding aside...being a carp fan myself i get where u r coming from but that was some pretty harsh words this is a public forum and i'm sure there are other children besides my own that use this forum we are all fisherMEN right? (and women) then lets act like it. its not like we dont see it everyday. every time i go to the lake i see carp carcasses just left on the shore. i even talked to this old timer he said that when he cleans a striper if it don't look right he just leaves it there for the coyotes . yes by law that is illegal but its an everyday occurrence. i knew this thread was gonna catch some heat the day i read it and seen the pix but on the flip side at least they wont go to waste the buzzards and coyotes will clean up. tight lines everybody and lets all try and get along

To be clear, the carcasses were not left on the shore.

I did not intend nor foresee any controversy coming from this post. I grew up fishing lake mead with my uncle and when we caught carp, we killed them. Back then we'd even use them as cutbait for Cats. I'm doing as I've always done and am within my rights.

Edit: *Can't we all just get along [Smile]

No need to defend yourself Erawk. I have seen pictures of piles of carp waist high from spearfishing. I doubt your 3 carp pissed off anybody other than the so called "save the carp" moderator.

Tomstoneradio- Being a moderator, you should know better then to reply to a post of this nature in that manner... There were many and I mean MANY other ways you could have expressed your opinion in the killing of carp without calling Erawk names and jumping to conclusions.

If an Admin happens to view this post, I vote to revoke his moderator status also. Whats a guy with that much forum activity have any business being a moderator in the first place?? He registered for the forum on Jan 10, 2010, 8:43 PM ...and only has like 50 posts..

I also nominate Thewhizzle for new forum moderator.
