Can you put any pound line on any reel or is there a certain size for each size reel and rod?

Each reel will have written on it what pound test it will take. You can go heavier useing braid.

I have heard that using too heavy a line for a rod, say 80lb on a rod rated for 10 or 20lb, can break the rod if you get snagged or hook a heavy fish. Also line that is much heavier than the what the reel is rated for can stress the mechanics of the reel and burn it up faster than normal.

That might not apply with braid since it is smaller diameter, not sure.

For the most part you should stick with the lines a rod and reel is rated for. Spool capacity and reel performance can suffer from using too heavy a line as well.
