I went to work early and got a call from Sam that he wanted to take the boat out and fish for gar with his little brother. So we met at Five Guys around noon and had some burgers and then went out in the absolute heat of the day to hunt for gar! (River Monsters - I hear they tear out boat props in a single bite according to the local folk lore) emoLaugh Hit the water around one after I picked up some white nylon rope at Home Depot and some gatorades and ice from the gas station. Oh did I forget to mention the snicker bars. So we get out there and I take a jig cut some rope and run the hook through the rope and tie some mono around the rope where it meets the jig head - never really done this before so not sure if I did it right. emoScratch Anyhoo, poured some garlic sauce on the rope and began to patrol the bank. Turns out all the gar were in the current in the channel so I ran the trolling motor while Sam and Jack sight casted to the gar boils. A few gar chased the rope baits but would not commit..... emoScratch What's up with that? I mean it was quality rope and I paid top dollar for it!! emoBang Maybe someone can tell me how they do it. Kept getting rope baits chased right up to the boat and then they would turn and swim away. Were we reeling too fast? So Jack sees a big one and starts to cast only he has my finger. emoHoppingmad OUCH! Fortunately the hook is almost weedless on the jig because of the rope so a little pain and blood on the shirt and we are back fishing. Decided to give up on the rope and caught a bream which quickly turned into cut bait. The way I rigged it was a single bait hook - straight shank and then pushed a treble hook eye through the bait hook and attached the strip bait so the treble would swing freely until it connects and the force of the fish pulls it tight against the shank... Well it worked .. hooked one on first try Sam did and I put my glove on and held it up for a picture on his phone which I do not have access to so no post - sorry. So I bid farewell and left them to fish while I went back to work. 30 minutes later I get a call from Sam - Jack buried a hook in my foot. Man Jack is not having a great day - so he got a rooster tail stuck in a tree fishing for more bream bait and yanked it out and it flew between them and then whipped back toward Sam and bam - right in the heel of the foot. A couple of hours later the First Med had it out --- No more gar for this outing. Gosh "Gar nit" Well they want to try again so if anyone has any advice about the rope bait technique maybe that would help and keep bream baits out of trees! emoGeezer
