Fished Lucky Peak from 7:00 to 9:30 and picked up our two limits, plus lost at least as many. Pretty constant action. Most of the kokanee ran 15-18". Starting to show the slightest bit of color. Man, do those big guys fight! Lots of fun. Mike

We stopped buy LP yesterday for a few hours and each got 5, lost many more. Had one hook itself that I can't figure out how. Hook went in the left eye socket and out the right. Sure tasted good smoked up!

My boat is in the shop but I'd really like to catch some kokes. You guys catching them from the bank as well as from the boats or do you have to have a boat with downriggers? If you're fishing from the bank, what type of bait are you using? Never fished for them before but it sounds like a helluva time.

Sorry, M.D. Kokes are pretty much a trolling thing.

We only needed to drop down about 5-10' to catch fish. However, dropping down to 15-20' with jet divers got bigger fish. Never let out a down rigger. Maggots worked real well for us. My buddy went out today and caught a limit using the same methods. I'm a casual kok fisherman so not the best at it. I'd like to hear what worked for Kodiak1?

Actually, there are a few casting techniques that work when they are close to shore. They are salmon, and plenty of salmon are caught from shore in salt water, after all.
Get a hot pink or pink and white Buzz Bomb in the 2.5 to 3 inch size, and replace the treble hook with a small red octopus style hook. Tie the Buzz Bomb on about 8" of line between two swivels. Be sure to use the little rubber stoppers above and below the lure, so the knots don't get beat up. Little pink or red beads would probably work too. The swivels keep the lure the right distance from the hook while still giving it slack line so the action isn't compromised.
Tie the hook onto about 6" of line and attach it to the bottom swivel. If you use lighter line to the hook, if you get snagged you won't lose your lure. Tip the hook with a piece of sweet corn. You can dye them red and flavor them with anise if you want. Cast out, let it fall to the depth you want, and then retrieve with short jerks, letting the lure fall back on a semi-slack line. Be alert for a pickup on the fall. If you feel the slightest tick, it's a fish. If you're ripping the hook out of their mouths, use a rubber bumper.
The kokes are attracted to the color and vibration of the lure, but will hit the corn.

Last year they schooled up under the Spring Shores docks around the first week of August. They were there as the water dropped and then moved off towards the west boat ramp. Very easy to catch with a 3/8 oz orange or red pixie. I think that was where the F&G truck must of dumped them and they thought that was their spawning grounds. Great time to pick them up from shore.

Thanks for the report. That is a nice size compared to the ones we have here at Ririe.

Thanks AA....that's what I thought but when I googled it I kept getting references to buzz baits and that didn't seem right.

The Blue Fox Pixies are salmon catching machines. I used them often in Valdez, Ak for pinks and silvers. But a better lure for them is the Blue Fox Vibrax spinners. I landed way more fish with them. Best i found were the blue bodies with silver blades size 5 and 6. As kokanee are salmonoids they should work as well. Tight lines
