I made it back after a week of fishing for Salmon around Ellis. We fished from the bank and when we started the water was waist deep 2' off the shore. It dropped over a foot in the last week and is quite nice now. Fishing was up and down. One day would be hot, the next 2 or 3 days you could not buy a bite. Over all it was a great trip and I have plenty of tasty salmon to eat now.
I limited out on 2 days and hooked fish ever day. My goal was to break my record of 36" inches that I set last year. On Thursday I broke that record with a 38" male. I was quite content after that since I had caught a few 34" and now had a fulfilling week of salmon fishing. Went fishing Friday and landed 2 more 34" and then I hooked into a tank. The battle lasted about 30 mins, but in the end I won. A 42" female to top off a great week of fishing.
This is the reason I love living in Idaho.

Nice fish and sounds like a good trip. I saw you guys when I was there on Sunday and Monday. Did you guys fish the same hole all week?

Yeah, that is about the only place I fish. There are better holes, but I enjoy the group of people that usually fish this hole. The company makes the trip more fun.

Nice fish! Seeing that 42 incher makes me want to go back again! I'm a rookie and had a few break me off last week. Any suggestions for fighting a tank like that?

Patience. I landed all fish with 20lb Maxima and the 42" was over 20lbs.

Thanks. Fishing has been slow this year, but still fun. The mosquito's are thick, but the people are even thicker. Having the upper salmon shut down has really put the pressure on the Ellis to Salmon stretch. I thought steel head season was bad, but this salmon season is crazy. The Ellis area is wall to wall campers and people. Funny thing is that down river it is not to bad at all. There are places all over to fish farther down and it seams the number are better there also.
I think I will be heading back up Wed night to do one more weekend before they shut it down. It is a little addicting I guess.

So where do you go that's not up by Ellis? I fish for steelhead a lot down past shoup but have only been on the upper stretch once for salmon a few weeks ago. I realize that if you have a spot you'd like to keep to yourself than that's fine, I dont expect you to give up all your secrets. But any suggestions for a trip this weekend so I'm not shoulder to shoulder at Ellis?

Fantastic!!! So glad you got into them... I finally managed to get one landed, so I'm happy. Ain't no nookie like chinookie!!
If you want to know a couple of good holes closer to Salmon, stop in and see me. I'll be there Thursday through the weekend. Driving by this morning, Ellis has cleared out a bit- a lot less people than Friday and Saturday.

As far as places to fish, just head down river past Ellis and through the canyon. Once you are out of the canyon, there are quite a few places to fish with very few people. Camping down that way is a bit tougher, but it all depends on what you have. Sometime you just have to find your own spot.
Aintnonokkie, glad to hear you got into some fish. We visited you about 4 times last week. We even came in and bought 3 pairs of waders.

I remember seeing you... I thought it was you, but wasn't sure... I remember all those waders going out! Glad to see you were successful...
Hey chrome junky, I remember the hat guys too... say hi if you make it by again. Sounds like you guys are doing great! It is kind of ironic that I live here but can't seem to get out and fish as much... three hours this morning but no fish. I am fishing anywhere from Cronks Canyon to McKim Creek, there are some good salmon holes in there, and usually a lot less people, although McKim Creek was packed last night (which caused me to bypass it).
Nothing better than catching a King! I feel rich when I have some in the freezer.[cool]
