Boise River (In Town)????
#1
Hey guys I fish the boise river alot because I can cross the street to fish it but lately with all the floating its almost impossible. Talking with my neighbor he said to go up above Barber Park, also said there were browns up in that section of river. My question is....isn't that all part of the Barber Pool off limits area? Thanks

the fairivew bridge area has fished well for me in the past ( in december )........and one honey hole of mine is behind the lander street treatment plant.........some of the holdover steelhead will hold here is well. and a REAL good spot is just below the americana bridge inbetween it and the train tressel. REAL good! wade out and fish the greenbelt side with a 1/16 oz panther martin or small spinner of the like . cast it against the bank wind just enough for the blade to turn and whammo. i cant guarantee a limit but you will catch something even a sucker or squaw fish or two............

Fish it early in the morning. Floaters will be sparse, and you'll have better luck then anyway.

General rules for that area above Barbar but good luck on the access. The few times I've been in there the fishing wasn't that great away.

I've seen a couple of LARGE browns roll in the evening in the upper section about even with the Crow Inn. Along the pilings. Never tried for them... Maybe a night fish with sculpins or worms?

4-7 inch Rapala (rainbow), with 15lb line and fished with a jerking action. I'm gonna try that.

Hands down the best lure for Boise River brown trout is a chartreuse bodied rooster tail, orange coming in a close second. You have to get your spinner down deep in the rocks; expect to lose plenty. I make my own so I can afford to fish them effectively. The only time I fish for them nowadays is when the river is at it's lowest. I don't start until I know the spawn is over--usually around late November--then through the winter months. Most years the action slows down in late February. Best areas are between Americana and Barber. Since this photo was taken, I have switched to barbless siwash hooks.

DTB - I was hoping you'd chime in on Browns in the city. Can't see your pic's at work but will look at them tonight. Not sure how long you been here but do you happen to remember the hole that was under the old 8th st bridge? My buddies and I caught some trophies there. Not really sure what the area looks like now with the new 9th st bridge. Anyway thanks for the good info [cool]

I've been fishing the Boise since the early '80's. It took me a few years to really dial in the browns. I know two other anglers who worked about as hard as I did figuring it out and all three of us ended up exclusively using swing blade spinners. The other two fellows use store bought rooster tails, one of them uses chartreuse also and the other orange. None of us knew each other and we all came to our conclusions independently.

I've fished the 8th St. hole a lot over the years, it's a nice deep rocky (snaggy) hole, I love it. Biggest one I've caught there went probably 6#.
