hey i am just working up by there and i would love to go out at night and try to catch some fish but to be honest the only thing i know about it is that its really big. but is the fishing good most times or not really that great of a lake to fish please any info will help what to uses to what kind of fish are in there just some pointers so i dont look like a total fool in front of the guys

I fish it quite often and find it kind of tough. Spoons, rapalas, and jigs will all work. I have been using a floating jig head with a crawler and have gotten some. I see lots of bank fisherman use worms and sucker meat and do good in the fall and spring. It is big and lots of its access is tough. There are some kokanee in there also and I have been trying to get them without any luck either. I don't try real hard when I go out as I just like being out. I will be out all weekend and give you a report. I usually fish from a small boat.
Not to hijack the thread but I have been fishing at palies at Big Elk Creek lately and am wondering if anyone know if I will find any kokanee in that arm or if they are just in the main lake.
It is a great place for sure and does have some big fish. Flies down deep work also I have heard. Good luck.

I've never fished Palies but I do know the Kokes start to move up Big Elk Creek to spawn as early as late August. I'd think they would be in that arm within the next couple weeks if they're not already present.

My daughter got a kick out seeing them at Ririe by the docks. Might take you're kids there to watch em.

I was up from Mcoy Creek near the Wyoming border for a good chunk of yesterday and today and had no luck. I tried spoons, rapalas, crawlers in various ways, power bait, and other methods and had no luck. I didn't try any flies but think I should have. Was nice to be out none the less although I find this a tough reservouir to fish. We had a canoe and also fished from shore.
I would not let this report stop you from trying as there are nice fish and plenty of fish in there.
I will keep an eye for kokanee in Big Elk but it will probably be Sept. before I get back up there. Hopefully a few times left to go out up there.
