Congrats to Stripercraze

Congratulations to Stripercraze for his 1st place finish at the NSC tournament this weekend.

Fishing was tough for some of us, even our group.
There was so much shad in the water the fish finder alert sounded for shallow water alarm.

The entire screen was scrambled, thought it was broken.

[inline Shad-002.bmp]We were at Temple Bar with no cast net.

The shad were everywhere from the surface to 40 feet. When the sun went down the striper pushed them up to 10 feet. The fish finder could not ping thru the wall of bait.

Here's how to get there

We fish the from Temple to Burro Bay in the Temple Basin. Would like to go up to the Gregg Basin on day.
There is little boat traffic during the day and few people at night.

Only thing is the water is slightly green not Gin clear like the Vegas Basin.[inline the%20temple.jpg]

Good job Dean!

Man, that is a mess of shad. And no cast net? What a shame...

Thanks everyone!!!

It was real tough out there. Alot of bait and a lot of fish marked and very slow fishing. I have tried to catch shad from the boat with light out. Never had any luck. they seem to scatter right before the net hits. If you have someone with you and kill the light right before it hits you can pick up a few.

Does anyone else have any methods for this?

I have tried the same thing with mixed results. Started with the light pretty deep to attract shad. Draw the light up to the boat and the shad may follow right up to the surface. Kill the light as the net is tossed and the shad do not seem to scatter as fast. However, most of the bait swims under the net before it can close in deep water. Shortening the line on the net and adding additional weight around the edge of the net seems to help it close quicker. Even with all this effort I have never loaded the net up, like you, just netting a few at a time, sometimes making it worth the effort, sometimes not. [:p]

Maybe an umbrella net? I'm not sure if they are legal here or not.

Do shad spread out through out the lake? or do they stay in one big school that roams around the lake? can fish swim from government wash all the way to temple bar?

What about lowering a minnow trap over the side of the boat? hmmmm might have to try that.
