Trout Net Question -- I need help!!
#1
Okay, here's the deal. My senior year of high school in wood shop my teacher showed us how to make fish nets by steaming the wood first, and then bending it around in a loop and glueing the ends together. I made one and it looks great! It looks just like the ones at the flyfishing shops that you can pay anywhere from $15 to $100. I was really proud of it. I drilled the holes to string a net on it, bought the net and everything. Now, for 5 years, it has sat in a box waiting to be strung. My problem is that 1) I have no idea how to string it up, and 2) I have no idea what type of cord I need to do so, or where to get it. I looked at Angler's Inn way back then, but I didn't find what I was looking for. Does anyone have any advice/ideas on how I can get this net working? Has anyone ever replaced the net in their trout net before? I'd love to get this working before the perch party on Sept. 6th, so any help would be appreciated!

You need to route a 1/8" half round groove, 1/16" deep around the outside of the net centered on the holes you drilled. Drill 2 extra holes near the handle. Take a piece of heavy line, maybe 50 lb mono about 10" longer than the circumference of your net, tie a big knot in one end. Thread this line through the first of the extra holes. thread a loop from the top of the net through the next hole, thread the 50 lb mono through this loop and then thread the next loop through the next hole and thread the mono through this loop and continue till you hav reached the last extra hole. Pull the mono as tight as you can and tie a big knot as close to the handle as possible. The hard part is getting the knot close to the handle. Another way to finish it off is to tie a knot that will just barely fit through the hole you drilled, tie it so that you when you stretch the line tie the knot is hidden inside the handle, then put some 5 min. epoxy on the knot and in the hole and pull the knot into the hole. WHen the epoxy cures cut off the excess mono.

There are probably better ways but this is easy and it works.

Cat Man-

I was just on BassPro.com and saw that they have replacement netting available from their online store. I didn't look at it all that close, but the smallest sizes (I think anywhere from 14" to 18" diameter) were like $4.99 cents for the netting. I don't know what kind of quality it is either. Just thought I'd pass it along.

Hey thanks fishdog. I already did put the groove in the outside, and the two extra hole. So all I need is the string to thread on the net. I hadn't thought about using monofilament fishing line, but that should actually work pretty good! Thanks for the idea. I think I may try that. Does anyone know if there is a better type of line to use for this, or is mono a good choice? I bet TD has some info on this. I think I'll drop him a pm just to be sure. I also already have the net, so I'm almost there!

Thanks Maddawg. I've heard a lot of talk about hooked tackle, and I wish I lived closer. Isn't it in Ogden? I'm not exactly sure where it is, but I live in Orem and I rarely make it up to Salt Lake let alone beyond. I live about 3 blocks from the Angler's Inn in Orem -- a Sad loss. It's been closed for awhile now. Anyway, I already have the net, I've had it for years. I've just been waiting for no reason at all to rig it up. I just didn't have any line or knowhow to string the net to the wood frame. I think I got what I need to know now, though. I just need some nylon line (TubeDude pmed me about what he's done in the past) and I'll be set to string it up.

I'm going to get the line tonight probably so I can string it up. I'll let you know how it works out. I'll have to remember next time I'm up in Salt Lake to go check out your store.
