#1
So I was reading somewhere the other day that there is samllies in Strawberry. Some guy cought one and the DWR says they have known for about 2 years now but saw they wont grow big or produce fast. The fish that was caught was a 13'. Not to bad a smallie for the first one cought out of a lake I think.

Just kinda wanted to know what everyone elses thought, views, ideas was on this.

Thanks guys

I think the smallie in Strawberry is a Sad sign of the times. A world class trout fishery is going to be negatively impacted because some short sighted bozo thinks he knows better than the biologists. Just wait, I'm sure some synapse impaired nimrod will throw walleye or perch in there too. It's a depressing wave of the future. All mid elevation reservoirs in the state are at risk from illegal introductions of fish and anglers will pay a heavy price. It makes a pretty good argument for euthanasia LMAO.

I just read a response from the biologist over that area. Basicall it said the growing season is so short most the babies won't grow big enough to service the starvation period. Basically they'll starve over winter and the ones that do live won't grow very big. It also made a mention that there has been a couple of fish reported besides this one and they think they were transplanted that size. It's a serious issue but they don't think it could have a negative impact on the fishery. To be on the safe side they shocked the cove were the smalls came from and they didn't find any other smallies.

I think that the biologist is simply trying to downplay the impacts to the fishery. Why wouldn't they survive in Strawberry?. Have you ever known a smallmouth fishery in Utah where reproduction was a problem?. If cold water and a short growning seaon severly impacted smallmouth reproduction, why would they thrive in Flaming Gorge, Deer Creek and Jordanelle just down the road. A couple of years ago there was a proposal within the DWR to stock smallies in Strawberry to help control chubs and suckers. Now they suddenly won't survive. I don't buy it. I think it's a case of a trout bio trying to predict bass behavior. Just my $.02. Don't get me wrong, I love smallmouth bass and I am very familiar with them. They are my favorite game fish. I just don't think they belong in prime trout waters.
