SOCIAL CIRCLE, GEORGIA - Portions of Lake Burton have been closed to boater traffic until midnight, May 6, 2011 due to hazardous conditions, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The "Temporary Hazard Area" designation, authorized under state statute OCGA 52-7-20(d) and signed by Commissioner Mark Williams today, is restricted to coves in the northern portion of the lake in the damaged area and will allow continued recreational use of the lake outside of the Hazardous Area. All areas north of 34.49.40.27N/83.33.41.22W and 34.49.40.20/N83.33.1.99W are closed to vessel operation and other recreational water related activities. (See map.)
"The Lake Burton area sustained heavy storm damage in residential areas during recent storms," said DNR Commissioner Mark Williams. "As a result, I am temporarily closing certain areas of the lake to vessel operation and other recreational water related activities for the safety of the public."
These areas of the lake will reopen once the temporary designation expires.
