Fish species Checklist!!!

Hey Everybody, I'm looking for any and all help! I'm trying to catch and take a pic with every species of fish that I can so one day I can put them in an Album with info about the fish or my story or maybe frame them together for my garage or game room or trophy room one day! I usually practice catch and release, unless the fish obviously won't make it after handling or a bad hook. Also while searching for new species, I'm always looking for a bigger better fish to replace a photo of a smaller fish or bad pic. So the Idea being that I have the best pic of all species that I can get.

I've put together a list of fish I believe to be catchable in Idaho or surrounding areas in a spreadsheet and where I think I can find them, but any additional Info would be great!

I've highlighted in Red the fish I have already caught and taken pics of. If you don't want to give up your secrets, thats, fine, but even pointing me in the right direction would be great. Also if there is a catchable species in the area that I missed please let me know. If you'd like to add it directly to the spreadsheet and save it and return it back to me that would be great, or just post it on the forum would be cool too!

cutbow's you can catch in the snake as well

kamloops can be taken from american falls reservoir also

mountain white fish can be taken from snake river salmon and clear water rivers

utah chub are in snake river boise river there all over the place

greyling and char can be found in bloomington

northern pike in twin lakes in panhandle area..

tiger muskie Lamont & Johnson in south eastern Idaho

Utah suckers can be found in marsh creek in epic sizes... and quantity

chisel mouth salmon and clearwater rivers..

dolly varden can be caught in almost all rivers in norther idaho.

How is it your keeping track of what species you have and don't have? Do you know of any other species that i may not have on my list? or that shouldn't be there? this is the pictures of my checklist! If your gonna head to Reno anytime soon, try the Truckee River at a place called Rock Park in Reno. I caught a few, but I watched a guy catch 5 different species of trout bottome bouncing a worm in less than 2 hours. So maybe stick to Idaho and bordering States! haha

Also are you looking to catch the different species of cutthroats? Westslope, Yellowstone, Snake River Fine Spotted, Bonneville

Kamloops is an area specific species of rainbow trout. They have been stocked heavily in Southeast Idaho.

Redband Trout are a rainbow species that is native to Southwestern Idaho.


I also was going to say that you can use the stocking reports on F&G website to locate lakes that have grayling or goldens etc.

dont forget cisco and arctic char and lampray and steelhead and grass carp and the buffalo carp and leather sided carp.. and im sure im forgetting somthing I know i am i just cant think of it right now.

I thought I would also mention that the places where you mention golden trout ie Billingsley and Clear Lake. Don't contain golden trout. They have the banana or yellow color mutation of the regular rainbow trout. They are fun and should be on your list, but if you want true California Golden Trout in Idaho you need to go to some of the high mt lakes that contain them.

Go to the F&G home page, choose fishing, then choose Historical Stocking. Choose the region you want to search, and narrow the search down to about 10 yrs. Then choose the Golden Trout/Grayling species. Check out each lake to see if it was grayling or goldens stocked.

I am not much of a trout guy but I didn't notice the LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT on the list. You could go to grasmere res for them. Ron

Do these mutation colored fish have a specific name? I've caught rainbows with gold shine to them up on the trinities but I didn't think anything of it at the time. Besides the color doesn't show up for my pics well.

I have heard the yellow strain of rainbows called by many names. Most common in use seem to be Palamino Trout, Banana Trout, and Yellow Trout. Mistakenly they are also called "golden" trout.

Utah stocks some yellows and then some others that are that yellow color but are actually albinos complete with the red eyes. The ones in Idaho aren't albinos and have regular eye color. Here is a video of a Palomino:

The Wind River Mts has some beautiful fish and especially beautiful golden trout.

Noting like a bucket list to get one going. Sorry I couldn't open it yet. The computer at the hotel I am at don't allow it. I have a list of my own that I am working on. Nothing like a good goal! I will check you list out at home and see if I an add any info for you if you come down south of the idaho border.

Thanks everybody for your help! I've updated my list dramatically and Found a site page that has an Idaho chapter and has a huge list and some info on all Idaho fish recorded it seems. I've put them all on the list and divided them up a bit better, but it's gonna take some real work to make this an actuality. I'll re post the list in a new thread, including all the suggestions from you's guys! thanks, Sean
