Two catfish anglers can get in for the price of

one this weekend at Santa Ana River Lakes

The last trophy catfish plant of the season this week and a two-for-the-price-of-one special Friday through Sunday make this an excellent weekend to visit Santa Ana River Lakes. The bite has been very good and more trophy fish will just stoke the action.

While the night bite is still very good for anglers buying 24-hour passes, available on Friday and Saturday nights, the cooler evenings and waning moon have made the action good during the morning and evening for anglers purchasing regular passes, too. And those are the passes that are available on the two-for-one special.

"Fish were in the frying pan this week," said Chris Elliott at The Lakes' tackle shop. "Fishing was really good this week. Just make sure you stop by the bait shop and talk to the cashier. He will tell you what's been hot. We want you to catch fish!"

Some whopper stringers were reported by 24-hour anglers with 15-fish limits. Kenny Mitchell and David Gresham, both Los Angeles, and Bernard Lopez, Paramount, teamed up to land 45 catfish that weighed 116 1/2 pounds fishing with shrimp doused with Crave Gravy in anise or garlic flavor.

On another trip, Kenny Mitchell and Bernard Lopez fished with Jay Lamori, also Los Angeles, and Gary Drew, Covina, to land 60 cats that weighed 89.5 pounds, and the stringer included cats at 9-0 and 10-0.

Eugene "Blue" Armstrong, South Gate, and Lee Porter, Downey, had 10 cats that weighed 60 pounds, including two 10s and an 8-0.

Amazing individual stringers included Shawn Anderson, Carson, who landed 15 fish that went 46 pounds, including fish at 10-0 and 8-0. Joe Wells, Los Angeles, had just six cats but the weighed in at 37 1/2-pounds. His big fish included a 10 3/4, a 10, and an 8-pounder.

Big fish of the week was an 11 1/2-pound cat landed by Joseph Wells, Los Angeles.

The cats are showing from all around the lake on a variety of baits or bait combos, but the one common ingredient to a full stringer has been the addition of Crave Gravy. Shrimp, mackerel, and Dumong's mackerel have all been good with Gravy.

The Santa Ana River Lakes' special buddy event, anglers can buy one $18 adult pass on and get a second adult permit for free, will continue this week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. This means fishing buddies or husbands and wives -- if they go together -- can fish SARL at half price again this weekend. In addition, tagged catfish planted in recent weeks for special events will continue to pay off through Sunday. They are worth up to $100 in cash.

Anglers can fish Santa Ana River Lakes from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass costs $18 has a five-fish limit. The $40, 24-hour passes are valid from 5 p.m. until 4 p.m. the following day.

Corona Lake continues to pump

out channel catfish to 11 pounds

Good catfish action continues at Corona Lake and the last plant this season of trophy-quality cats to 10 pounds or better was slated for this week.

Also this week on Friday through Sunday, anglers purchasing an $18 regular day or evening fishing permit will get another one free.

Top catfish this past week was an 11-pounder landed by Manuel Lopez, Corona, to top of a five-fish stringer that weighed in at 30 pounds. He was using chicken liver in the trees, which has been the top area.

Donovan Swan, Norwalk, had 15 cats that weighed in at 33 1/2 pounds, while Lee Neang, Buena Park, and Lee Williams, Inglewood, had 20 cats that weighed 61 1/2 pounds.

The biggest fish of the week, overall, was a 17-pound carp landed by Kal Han, Long Beach, on a nightcrawler.

The lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each $18 pass has a five-fish limit. In addition, $40 24-hour passes are being sold Friday and Saturday nights and these passes have a 15-fish limit.
