A quick baitcasting questions
#1
Well i almost have to use braided line in the lakes i fish, due to them being insanely weedy and i have to literally pull fish out of the water with 3 lbs of weeds on them. But i heard if you only spool braid on a baitcaster the line digs in or something. Then i heard filling it half with mono then braid. What is the best way to spool braid on a baitcaster without risking the line digging or or whatever?

I want to add something to this. I normally use 1/4 oz bullet weights and a 3/0-4/0 offset hook. With senkos, tiki stiks, culprit worms. I dont use very many heavy hard baits. actually i only have a few hardbaits. And rarely use them. so i use lighter lures and such.

Hello Edgy,
Did you mean braided line digging into the "guides" on your rod? I'm not sure I totally understand the question so my answer may be off track but if your concerns are the braided line putting grooves in your rod guides, that is really more of a concern with "spinning" set ups because the line constantly rests on the guides away from the rod. On a baitcast set up your guides are supported by the rod so it would be less of an issue?

Again I may be off on this one because I don't fish baitcaster all that much and I don't totally understand what you were asking but figured I'd try to help?

Good luck bud!!

Edgy,
I think you are talking about the braid digging into its self on the spool. If you use 20lb braid or higher you should not have about with digging. Anything below that you run a risk of the line digging which can cause backlash. If you use 20lb braid or higher i would first run a little mono on the spool then you can put 90% braid on there. Hopefully this is what you were looking for.
Thanks

Bustumbaits is right about the size. Anything over 20lb braid (20lb braid has a line diameter as small as 6lb mono/flouro line sometimes) shouldn't dig in as much but there are a couple things I do when I use braid to help against it.

First of all when you spool the line try to keep it tight as you reel in on. What usually happens is when your reeling in a smaller lure the braid comes back onto the spool looser and then one cast you hook a fish with about 20 yards out and when you set the hook the braid digs into the looser spooled line below it. The next cast when the braid reaches that 20yd mark the braid had dug into and the line stops flowing off the reel and your lure "jerks" it and that makes the spool start letting off line again faster then the result is a backlash.

When I spool new braid on the first time I take it out on the water I put on a my largest lure that is heavy and bulky and cast my line down the bank as far as I can then I walk up the bank (away from the cast direction) letting off more line as I walk until I have let out about 100 yds.

Now I start reeling that lure in as fast as I can with my rod tip right down next to the water. This makes the braid WET and the tension from reeling that lure so hard puts the line on the spool very tight.

This always seems to help my braid not backlash.

Also you might need to learn a new Knot to tie. Traditional knots used on mono or fluorocarbon don't seem to hold well on braided line.

I use this one.

thank you all for the advice. I picked up 30lb spiderwire braid, i need that strength due to the ponds i fish having extreme vegetation surrounding the banks, like i have pulled out a 2lb bass with like 6lbs of freaking moss, algae, and weeds covering it. and bytebull about the free reels you were sending me, i am sorry but i cannot take them, one im 16 and my parents were kind of suspicious about someone i have never met sending me a package :/ and my uncle gave me his new abu garcia silver max. Which i used today and loved it.
