Welcome to the site!!!!! we have quite a few guys on here that fish twin lakes frequently so im sure your question will get answered. the gills here last year started around the end of may but it stayed cold and wet for a long time. hopefully its a little sooner this year. sae with the crappie.

I don't know a date, but I think most bass and panfish start moving into the shallows and think about spawning when the surface water temperature gets around 60 degrees.

I was actually up there today, though I was after their larger cousins. The water was 49-50 degrees and fairly turbid, maybe 2, 3 feet tops of visibility. I would say that another month would probably get the gills moving up.

The temperature determines spawning time. Usually it's late April to mid May here in SW Idaho. Last year it was about a month behind due to the wet winter and cold spring. Bluegills spawn a little later than crappie in my experience.
Both crappie and bluegills will make feeding forays into shallow water before the temperature is high enough for the spawn to start. When the weather is over 60 degrees for a few days, they move in. If a cold front moves through, they retreat to the nearest deeper water until it warms up again. Then it's wash, rinse repeat until the water reaches the correct temperature for spawning and the males move in long term and begin to set up nests. [signature] |
