I joined these forums a while ago but am just coming back now that it is warming up. I am really no good at fly fishing, but have come to love it. I will be visiting a friend in Boise next weekend, is there anywhere we could wade and fly fish? Or is it a bit too early? Thanks for all your great advice.

Well, there's usually the Boise River, but at the moment the flows are extremely high, almost 7,000 CFS. Normal flows for April are usually anywhere from 700 to 1,200 CFS, so right now it's way past flood stage and very dangerous. You couldn't pay me enough to set foot in it.
How far do you want to travel from Boise?

Probably under an hour. Does that make me completely out of options?

No, there are other rivers around that are in better shape, plus still waters. The Boise River is just the only river that's right in Boise. If you want to try your hand at warmwater fishing, there have been reports of people catching bass by wading at Lake Lowell.
You might try calling Idaho Angler at (208) 389-9957. They're the local fly shop. They would know what's fishable and can give you recommendations on what to use. They're open weekdays until 5 PM and Saturdays until 3.

Just my two cents- if you're from out of state, I'd skip the visitor license in Idaho and bounce to the Owyhee River in Oregon. If you're wanting to wade and fly fish, that'd probably be the best experience. There's plenty of ponds w/ stocked fish in and around Boise, and you can hit 3 or 4 in a day, but if you're really wanting to wade and flyfish, that's your best bet.
Right now, flows are 240-ish. Much much much safer than the 6500 in town.

Thanks for the info nick. I am actually from SE Idaho. I already have my fishing license for the year, but I'll take a look at the owyhee. I know I already live in a good area but I still really suck at fishing. I am very new to it. I really struggle finding good access spots to fly fish. I see the rivers but don't know water well enough. Sometimes it's super fast, others too slow, too deep, not deep enough, etc etc. I just need to keep learning.
