Hi Folks,
Was in Idaho Falls the other day and we stayed at the Best Western Driftwood Inn across from the Temple.
I have seen folks fish there, but never had time to talk to them. My question is what fish are in that part of the river, and is bait allowed there. Thanks for any help.

Mostly trout in that area. There may be a few more species but that's the primary one on the snake around IF. Bait is allowed. I have heard the fishing is not the best around the greenbelt(where you were staying) but if you move north towards roberts or south towards shelley you would have better luck. This is mostly hearsay from someone who has lived in IF for a long time but has never fished the river seriously.
There is also a fishing pond there a little south next to the river called ryder park. It is heavily fished but I have heard of some success from there.

The greenbelt is fishable for trout if you don't have the time to go to other areas near Idaho Falls. I have seen quite a few people walk away with stringers full of trout. As already stated, bait can be used. As far as Ryder Park Pond goes, it's very small and is more suited for young children. The ID Fish and Game and Idaho Falls Parks department have had a heck of a time keeping the trout alive in the Ryder Pond this year. I'm not sure what's going on but the few times I've been there this summer, I've seen hundreds of dead fish and the F&G and the Parks Dept trying to get a handle on it. There are a number of good places to cast in on the Snake within 20 mins of Idaho Falls. Derick

Most the info given on the river around I.F. is pretty accurate. There are also sturgeon in the river in that section. I have a buddy that occasionally targets them just down from University Place. Most of them are on the small side though. As far as streams close to I.F. I guess the question is how close? The S. Fork of the snake is under 30 minutes if you head east outside Ririe. Same if you head north and hit the area around Twin Bridges or Lorenzo. If you want to go a little further you can hit vernon bridge and chester on the Henry's fork in under an hour. At about 1 hour you can make it to Warm River campground which is probably the first small stream somewhat close. Hope that helps some.
