Been a whle... Almost a month since the last time the boat met water. Busy, busy, busy. Lots of overtime lately so fishing took a backseat for a bit.
Knew it was going to be warm/nice out eventually so we both wore shorts but had our bibs with us for the early hours. Worked out great. I spaced sunrise time and thought it was later so we got to the marina/had the boat in at 7. Nice to be putting the boat in with light for a change. Didn't really care to sacrifice fishing time for it especially since there isn't a ton of hours with sunlight this time of year.
Wasn't sure how fishing was going to be since it has been a while. Hit some of the same spots we hit last time out and did ok. Nothing on topwater though we were seeing them jumping every now and then. I guess not as concentrated as it was a month ago. Worms/plastics wasn't happening at all. First time in a year I am thinking I didn't catch anything on a drop shot. Nothing on worms, jigs, etc. A few on a grub.
It was all about moving baits! Cranks (mostly squarebills), spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, etc.
Even though the day started out pretty slow it ended up being our biggest day of the year quantity wise even though there was many hours less fishing time as far as sunlight. We hit one spot at noon or so and anchor locked there with the Minnkota for over 2 hours. Caught 34 in that one spot alone. A LMB and Striper mix. A little heavier on the LMB side as for as quantity. It was a fish sometimes every cast to every other for 2 solid hours. The most we have ever, ever, ever caught at the same spot before.
In the end we caught 68 fish today. 3 SMB, 21 Stripers and 44 LMB. The smallies were the usual 1 1/2 pounders or so. The Stripers were on the bigger side (One 6 pounder, 2-3 four pounders, several three pounders and the rest were the usual sized Stripers.) That was by far the best batch of decent sized Stripers we have caught on Mead. Nothing monsterous wise on the LMB but all of them in general were nice'ins. A lot of 2 1/2 - 3 pounders. All stupidy fat.
Brought two Stripers home for dinner. Didn't keep the bigger ones but a couple 3 pounders were perfect. Just the right amount of fish to cook plus I didn't have to fillet a whole pile to get the amount I needed for a late dinner.
A first for me and something Madi wanted to do first after seeing it done on TV... I caught a double today on a squarebill. That is how crazy this one spot in the middle of BFE was!
