myth or truth?

So i have heard reports that anglers have poked holes in the ice only to find the water level well below the ice cap... just wondering what your thoughts and or maybe expieriences are on this. also i drove by pineview this mornin and it looked capped but didnt venture down to check the ice.

In the first week or two of the new season, it is not likely to happen but it can if the water level is dropping as the ice is forming. I have seen it happen later in the season but not very often. If you do find it like that, be very careful getting on and off the ice as the edge is the most likely spot for the ice to break.

Several years ago, my brother fished Causey through the ice. The water was about one foot lower than the ice.
The ice was over 12 " thick though. It was weird but safe.
This was in late season.

Heard tell of it happening at Oneida. I think it was like a 6" gap. Spooky a carp - I'd be outa there in a blinky!

have heard of levels of ice - where you might break through surface crust, drop down to another layer of solid ice.

Late season - places like the Berry - with lots of snow/slush buildup. But it's not the real 'lake surface'.

When ice is that thick, you are likely safe but if there is a weak spot it will likely be near shore because that is where all the ice is being supported at. I have seen it many times at Causey and other lakes lake Rockport. When the water level drops, you see big sheets of ice laying at an angle against the shore because that is where it breaks. As more and more water is released, the ice at the center of the lake starts to sag and that is when it breaks at the shore. Was he fishing closer to shore or the middle of the lake?
