Torqeedo Electric Motors Power Oklahoma Water Taxis
#1
Oklahoma City's Bricktown Water Taxi fleet is now operating much quieter and cleaner thanks to Torqeedo. Six 40-passenger water taxis were recently converted to electric propulsion with Torqeedo's Cruise 4.0 motors and lithium batteries. This took place with the assistance of a grant from the US Department of Energy and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The 26' boats are owned and operated by Water Taxi, LLC in Oklahoma City's Bricktown District, an area featuring entertainment, shopping and restaurants. With the electric motors, passengers will now be able to enjoy a quieter, smoother, smog-free ride along the canal.

Switching from gas powered engines to electric motors not only reduces the boats' environmental impact, but saves the operator money on maintenance and fuel costs. All six boats were converted in only eight days, including the installation of four charging stations.

The Cruise 4.0 is a light, powerful outboard that's waterproof and easy to move. It supplies a 9.9 hp equivalent thrust and a display on the motor makes it easy for operators to monitor battery charge status, remaining range, speed and power consumption. Torqeedo's Power 26-104 Li NMC battery weighs only 55 lbs. and delivers 2,685 watt-hours. It's protected against short circuits, overloads, deep discharge and wrong polarity.
