Any new reports on Stary (Rabbit Gulch) area? Couple wks ago, hot for rainbows and last wk, skunked! And no perch to be found! Taking a nephew from Albq. up on Tues, and would like to show him a good time. Or any other place where we can get lucky?

Three of us fished last Wednesday in the area south of the Highway 40 bridge. We were in 49 to 52 feet of water mainly trying for perch. We caught some perch but the action was pretty slow. We also got some nice rainbows that would cruise through in mid-depths like 18 to 28 feet. The perch were right on the bottom and many of them seemed to have lockjaw. I could see them on my Showdown but most would not hit whatever I tried. I came home with 12 8.5-9.5" perch and a couple of 18" rainbows. My friends did about the same as I did.
There were quite a few people in the area considering it was a weekday. Three ATVs came roaring by in the morning and headed up toward the river. They came back through later in the day and I was wondering how they might have done up in the shallower water.
I'm looking at going over again sometime next week and I think we may give Rabbit Gulch a try. The access is usually easier and we've always caught perch there in the past. The trick is just finding out how deep they are and where the larger ones are hiding.
We may go on Tuesday, if you see three really cold guys too stubborn to set up their tents, that would be us. Come by and say hello.
I just listened to Sterling Poulsen's weather forecast for next week. I think my Quickfish 3 will go up as soon as one perch hits the ice. Temps are looking brutal next week. I'll have to plug my Powerstroke into a nearby currant bush! []
