I've been seeing about 30 HUGE bull elk right off the highway every day, so I thought I might let you guys know-in case anyone wanted to take a little afternoon drive to have a look. Go to Evanston-then North on Hwy 89. About 5 miles after you get back into Utah-watch on the West side of the highway in the hayfields. They are on the Deseret Land and Livestock's property (these are the ones they charge $10,000 to hunt!) If you wanna see 3-4,000 at a time (cows and smaller bulls), I can give you the info.

It is always an enjoyable drive. It is fun to drive along there and see the sage brush and elk antlers sticking above them from elk laying down everywhere, plus you usually get to see quite a few antelope. I have had the priviledge once to go onto Deseret (not hunting) and it is crazy!!!

I hunted Deseret for cow elk once. Huge bull elk were sitting close to the ranch road and they paid no attention to all the cars. They knew that they were safe. Awesome sight. Gets the hunter's blood going. Saw a buffalo on the run too.

Yes seeing the big ones is always great but ever since (a few years back) I heard they supected the boys at the Deseret Land and Livestock's of herding them onto their ranch with helicopters these guys leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Of course this sighting a few weeks before the hunt sure seemed (again never proven) to make sence because of the BIG BUCKS they charge. I hunt the walk in area just east of there and when I heard of the helicopter thing I began to wonder what chance does Joe Public have of bagging a big one - not much.
Again - all above has - to my knowledge has never been proven but the story did appear in the paper that the DWR was investigating. Never did hear anything else or any outcome from the investigation .
Again in this Great Country you are INNOCENT until PROVEN otherwise.
