Report for Friday Feb.1
#1
Launched at Callville about noon again. Water surface temp around 56.5. Few stripers at the dock and some flourescent green moss afloat. Almost no wind and water flat. All day saw maybe 5 bassboats and all came down from the Narrows area ...maybe they were on primary points or up in the basin...don't know. Taking out early so tournament guys...

Motored out to the first small cove at the bay entrance on the NE side and and fished the rock rubble wall ...standing out in 45 to 50 ft of water and casting to the shore with 1/2 oz.jigs.

On the rubble wall....Got bit on the fall, he swam towards me and I didn't realize it till too late. Then got light peck few minutes later. Bites seemed to be in about 15 to 20 ft. Not a solid jig hit at all. Water temp 57

Moved out to the cove entrance and threw weightless plastic around the larger boulders. Caught 1 smallmouth again 20 to 25 ft ( he was aggressive) and moved on around upstream looking for larger boulders, rubble slides on or near main points. Water temp here 57.5
Got solid peck on the weightless plastic and shook him off. That fish was much shallower..maybe 10 to 15 ft.

Fished jigs and dragged a senko on a carolina rig around the west point on Firebowl Cove. (35 to 40') Nothing. Went inside and tried 3 different known spawning locations..jigs and weightless to 25 ft...again nothing. water temp 58 and 58.4 degrees in the sun

Ended the day with a quick ride to Rotary Cove; checked some known good spots on deeper points there. My guess is the smallies are starting to stage, are spreading out for territory, but are still on main lake points ...not even secondary points much unless the spot is a prime one.

First smallie was about 13" the second one I had on was maybe 17"

Last report I thought I saw some rudimentary nests over by Kingman Wash but said nothing...you guys would think I'm nuts.

All this could change like it did last year with some wind and a cold spell.
Off the water at 5:30 water temp at the launch ..about 56.5

I don't know about bass fishing being boring.... It's fun when you figure out how to catch em.

Thanks for the info Tom, looking forward to the smallies coming up. I want to find some big females.

If you went out bassin with me, I doubt you would be bored. In fact, your head would probably be spinning wondering how anyone can fish so damn fast. lolol
I bet I make between 600-800 casts in 8 hours.

I like trolling for stripers too on occasion. I had some removable rod holders in my other bass boat and would troll it up when I got the itch. [fishin]

My fishing partner used to say the same thing...how come you make so many casts?

Right now ....Pullin' deep jigs in cold water is another matter. Some casts take 5 minutes. Then I am also fishing weightless to about 25 ft.....got to wait for that plastic to sink.
Ordinarily I make the presentation , wait a moment and then make another cast.

I never find bass fishing boring. You are always changing up to match conditions. Even edging down a wall which is same for 100 yards. Repetition doesn't happen often at Mead unless you are on long gravel banks

Doesn't work for me either... Slow is HARD to do. I'm with both of you as one of the 1000's of casts a day on the water types.

My problem is switching between the two. I can go out and fish fast all day, or go out and fish slow all day, but when I have to go back and forth, I lose patience and fish too fast.

But that's the fun of bass fishing... figuring them out.
