Rick and Cindy Brock came to do some deep sea sport fishingin Fort Lauderdale FLfrom Plano, TX aboard the Happy Day Today along with theTopshotfishing team. Today was a specialday for Rick - it was his birthday – and the fishing trip was a gift from hiswife, Cindy. Rick, being an avidfisherman, was looking to catch a Sailfish to add to his list of fishcaught.

We stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&TBait at the jetties in Fort Lauderdale. Our target was to catch a Sailfish. We had winds out of the north northeast at 15mph and seas running 3-4 ft. We headednorth of Fort Lauderdaleto a wreck that sits in 185 ft. of water. There we set up two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite andone live Goggle Eye on the deep line. Atthis point Rick remarked what wonderful way to spend his birthday. The bait on the left long got nervous as Inoticed him darting back and forth – a predator was approaching him. A Mahi Mahi grabbed the live bait and off heswam. As he exited the water, he showedhis beautiful green and yellow colors. Rick brought the Mahi Mahi to the bought and Jackson, our mate, gaffedand put the 17 lb Bull Mahi Mahi in the fish box. We set up the kite again and encountered a few chopoffs. A black shadow appeared on ourleft short kite. Jackson raised and lowered the bait to enticethe Sailfish to feed. But this fish justmust have had a “steak dinner” because he was not interested in the bait. Forty-five minutes later, another blackshadow appeared - this one was hungry!!! With bill and dorsal fin out of the water, the Sailfish chased the livebait around until he caught it. Immediately, the Sailfish came out of the water, and he tail-walked awayfrom the boat with whitewater flying. AsRick was reeling in the Sailfish, the line went slack, and the Sailfish pulledthe hook and swam away. Well, noSailfish for my birthday but still an excellent birthday.
