Since I eat very little fish but love to catch them. I don't mind catching perch if the action is fast but I've heard that if you turn them loose they die because of blowting air blader. But I love to bring in the trout or any other fish with a little fight. Any info on catching trout through the ice at Starvie? How and where. I fish it in the summer but you can boat around and find them. And they were getting big last fall. Any info would be nice. Thanks

If the perch air bladder comes out of the mouth you just have to grab a small hook and just poke a small hole. Not to long a go there was a conversation about it and apparently Tube Dude did survey with the dwr I believe before and they put tags on the perch that they made a small hole and let go those perch then Tube Dude caught a few of same perch another day.
If you just make a small hole apparently it can heal up pretty fast and live another day.

The trout have been very active this winter. When we target the trout the best way seems to fish suspended jigs tipped with nightcrawler about 12 to 20 feet down in water that is over 35 deep. Most any area on Starvation with those water depths will produce the rainbows. We have caught some 14/15 inch trout, but the average seems to be 17-19 inches with a few larger ones. There are also some nice browns in Starvation but we have only caught a few this winter. I haven't caught any browns this year but I have normally been focusing on the perch.
I got quite a few trout on one of [#0000bf]TubeDude's[/#0000bf] flashy jigs tipped with a piece of crawler. The trout have been pretty aggressive and they come through fairly often. I caught 9 one day over there with my second pole suspended at 18 feet, we were fishing in 55 FOW.
Good luck....Mike

Trout were in fire up there today, everyone I talked to had their limit in hr or less. I caught 10 one was a brown my first. That fish took more line and it was an Awsome fight. Pulled it off the bottom with a perch eye and a small ice jig.
Good luck.

Yes we did catch several rainbows at Rabbit Gulch last week. We moved from Indian Bay when we couldn't find the perch. We got the trout in 35 to 40 feet of water and they were suspended at about 10 to 16 feet. We were almost straight out from the fee station, so it's a short walk. You will probably need a board to span the soft edge in the afternoon. We used a downed tree branch to get across and back onto shore.
We got the trout on the same things we were using for perch. I had my second pole suspended at 14 feet and I caught three or four trout in two hours of fishing.
Good luck.....Mike
