I decided to give Rockport another shot Saturday....I should have got a report first. They must be filling the lake as there was about 10 feet of open water off the boat ramp before you hit the ice. The previous week the ice was 16 inches so I am sure once you get on it would be good. I didnt bring waders, shoulda... I did walk out a bit but when i hit almost the top of my boots I decided to give the weber a shot instead. Only had ice gear so not a lot of options. I tossed an olive tube jig. This stretch is artificials only so no bait. Turned 4 fish and landed 2 pretty browns 1 17 incher and one 13 incher, in about an hour and a half. Lost my jig, and so headed home. The weeb salvaged by trip. Without waders ya aint gettin on Rockport.

Thanks for the ice update at RP and the fishing report of the Weber. Too bad about not getting on the ice but goods to hear you got a few fish with your backup plan. Did you by chance check the edges on the opposite shoreline, by the main road?

Most of the upper end on the highway side had some water showing along the edge. Up closer to the dam it looked better but still sketchy. At least sketchy enough that this old guy aint gonna try it when I am by myself.

Ice out fishing is when you cast to the open water between the shore and the out going ice. Sometimes ice out is lights out action. So did you try casting into the open water of RP?

You'd be surprised at how little of open water it takes to get some fast action. I went to Scofield a few years ago and there was 5 feet of open water around the edges and we knocked them dead! We hit hyrum that year with 50 feet of open water and we got skunked.
Next time I think you better toss some lures in there just to see.

I waded out until the water was near the top of my boots I doubt it was more than 2 feet deep at the point the ice was there.. I have had some fast fishing at strawberry at ice out. But it didnt look fishable where I was that day on Rockport.
