I knew the cats feed all year but do you know about what temperature it needs to get before they start getting really active?

I'm no expert, but I'd think you'd start seeing more activity as the water warms to mid 60s, but cats are pretty opportunistic also, and as ice-off comes - you'll find cats scarfing up lots of winterkill, and also starting to stage for spring spawning.

Another kitty-tail I've heard is they tend to like to move upstream to stage for spawning, but will get log-jammed by such obstacles as dams. So they'll tend to pile up below said structures and just do it there.

The Bear seems open through Cache Valley, and the main channels of Cutler are open water, but the launch areas and edges still hold some ice/slush. But probably won't be long with these warming temps.

So when should we start up the Catfish Challenge this year? You guys gonna join the Northern Champions!

Coyote-Utcat, you guys got a little lucky streak last year and it goes right to your heads. I tell ya the south will prevail this year! I'm ready to get serious about this cattin' stuff after all the smack that came from the north last year. A 34 incher will come from Utah Lake this year. [Wink]

Can't wait to get goin'. I'm with Utahcatman on this one -- let's go from May to Oct. We need a few more recruits for the south. We were out numbered last year and that's the only reason we lost. [fishin].

And so it begins... teehee.
I think it was our CATS that outnumbered your cats!

So you guys saying till the End of October, or beginning? I'm ok with that. 5 or 6 months?
I need to learn how to find them better in summer and fall. I've had my best luck (and YES - it's luck 4 me!) in spring.

This year UTC- I'll have to make it down to the Refuge!
Just make sure you download your entry pix bud !!!

Gather they dumped a few cookies into Newton last year. I take that as good news.

Zman,
what have you been using to catch them on? I think since the big Bear Lake is going to become unsafe in the next week or two I better get the kids down to grandpas to fish for some cats.

Thanks

I see you have been a member for several years but the catfish contest won't start for a while, the ice fishing contest is still underway. Here is a link to the contest board, if you scroll down you can look over last years results: http://www.bigfishtackle.com/forum/gforum.cgi?forum=100

If I could still get to my spot on the Jordan ([#000080]edited[/#000080] Frontrunner), I could catch many bigger than 15 lbs. But, I will also be fishing the bear and posting pics. We caught many big cats and other species (including a 22" walleye) last year.

You can check HERE for the rules from last year's first Cat Contest. Don't think it'll change much, but we will start earlier, and sounds like there's interest it ending later too.

This year - I'm cracking the 30 inch mark! Mark my ruler! Seems them southern boyz can talk it up pretty big, tried to make it easy on 'em, the "line" isn't exactly "half" of the state. But that's ok. Some of these northern catters put their money where their hooks are and SHOW what big means!

Maybe it'll bring a cat-rig for after work tomorrow (got Crappie on the brain too!)
