Ok so I am looking to catch some whitefish on the Weebs for the smoker and am just looking for lures/tactics that you all have found that work the best(non-fly fishing). I don't care about the trout, just the whitefish. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, no help unless it's fly fishing. I didn't know they could eat a lure with the mouths they have. Maybe you could rig up a Prince nymph with some weight on a spinning rod, catch all the Whities' you want. Good luck.

I used to use a spinning rod rigged with a small spit shot and a couple flies, Gold ribbed hairs ear would always be one of them. They also seem to like pinks and yellows. You can just let the flies dift thru the hole like a worm. You should tick the bottom now and again with the split shot. You can use spinning gear and still fish flies. I agree with Remo. they have a really small mouth and flies are probably your best bet.

Like has been said, a split shot with a couple of flies is what I would use on a spinning outfit. A gold beaded pheasant tail is what I have had the best luck with. The smaller the split shot the better. Just enough weight to be able to "cast" it and have the current still carry it through the hole. Usually you can sight fish the whitefish. If you can find a big hole full of them you will often notice they will swim in a "circle" pattern. Traveling from the outlet of the hole, back to the inlet, back to the outlet and so forth. It's a lot of fun to find a big school like that and just be patient as they move their way around the hole and hopefully take your offerings as they come through. Good luck, and I do love me some smoked whitefish!

I would say that if you take the fly advice, here is a quick list of Whitie flies that have worked for me.
Gold Ribbed BH Hare's Ear
Prince Nymph
Zug Bug
Lightning Bug...Gold and Silver
Glo-Bugs
Good luck!

Yep what was said earlier Beadhead Prince Nymph, Beadhead Hares Ear or even Beadhead sowbug.
I would add use a water bobber half to 3/4 full and tie in swivel at the end to keep the bobber in place. Then tie in about 6 to 8 feet of the thinnest leader you can find. Fly Fishers use a leader called tippet. You can find 4x to 5x tippet in the fly fishing section of any sporting good store that sells fly fishing stuff. ( Walmart sells Cortland Tippet ) put a size bb splitshot about 6 to 8 inches form the fly and cast upstream. Let it dead drift down while reeling in the slacked line then letting line out as it pass you.
I think you can even find a Prince nymph at walmart. This time of the year try to find a prince nymphs in sizes 16, 18 20 preferable 18.
My Buddie refuses to fly fish [mad] so when we hit the rivers he uses this rig does pretty well.

It's not that I refuse to fly fish, I just have never learned how to. I would like to and that is one thing on my bucket list.

Very small hook, small sinker, small enough to keep it on the bottom but allow the current to keep it moving and a grass hopper. Nothing bigger than the small winged grass hopper. Those red and yellow winged hoppers that click when they fly are too big. Grasshoppers are the best kept secret of fishing. Whitefish go crazy on them as well as the brown. Seem they always work and they are found everywhere. Take a fly swatter and go hopper catching and then go fishing. I have found nothing that works better. My father always swore maggots were tops in Wyoming when he fished for whites. Rock rollers were always a good bait he and my grandfather claimed. They would take a screen and go shift through the gravel and pull up what ever was in the area. Me... I always used hoppers. Spinning rod or fly rod works well. Good luck.

You know those little maggots people use for ice fishing, called spikes? The only time I ever fished for whitefish, I surmised that since they feed a lot on small nymphs along the bottom, they would like those. They did, and I slaughtered them.
A small sinker at the end of your line and two small wire hooks on droppers, but with maggots instead of flies. Good luck.
