[:/][Sad]
I'm new to saltwater fishing and am planning a trip over thanksgiving to FLA. Can anyone help me on a rig setup for grouper and trigger fish. Specifically weights and types of hooks. Greatly appreciated.

I have yet to see the salty waters of any state, tho I have a standing invete.

my buddy down that way uses a 15 pound steel leader with #2/0 messler hooks.

stainless is the only way to go he says, the salt eats the other hooks right up in no time. they rust after the first use.

welcome to bigfishtackle. good to see you here.

Hey there rubmrv,

Welcome to BFT. I can't do you any good, I'm a west coast saltwater angler not familiar with Florida. Sometimes a local fishery has special characteristics that require a unique setup or hooks, as you suggested. The grouper fishing is really trippy. Instead of finding holes, the open party boats locate rock piles and structure then fish straight down on the fish. Triggerfish, as you probably know, are a quirky fish that takes a while to learn to catch consistantly. I believe their mouth shape makes them difficult to catch. The state boards may also have suggestions in present posts or archives.

Good luck in Florida.

Welcome to Big Fish. It's always good to try different things and have a wider variety of fishing knowledge. In North Carolina we fish for grouper and trigger fish also. It will help me cut down on my reply. If I knew where you will be fishing from. Are you going to be fishing on the Shore, Boat ,or a pier. Each has a different technique, but all are similar. For the groupers we fish on the bottom. There are a lot of ways to rig you tackle, but the basic bottom rig will work find. For the weight, It would depend on how much current you have and how deep the water is. I like to used at less 10 ounces of weight because we have a lot of current here. I use a 5 ought hook for grouper. Hope this help you.
