They were talking about ice at various lakes on the KSL weather report today. They just said that the ice is "soft" at Hyrum.

Thanks Greg guess I won't be trolling this weekend unless the warm streak will clear it. I know the back sloughs here in Benson opened up over the weekend so I don't think it will be long now. Thanks again. J

I noticed that on the way to work. Those always warm up pretty early too. I might have to give them a try. I drove past Newton on Saturday because I'd heard that there was a lot of open water, but all the cold weather sealed it all back up. I could see the line about 30ft out from shore where it had previously been open. Hopefully the warm weather this week will open back up and then some.

I was out to Newton a week ago and there was about 10 ft of thin edge margin then so it sounds like its getting closer. It goes fast once it decides its time. Later J

I hope so. The reservoirs north of the border aren't usually far behind. Then the real fun begins.

That's true. Hope they still have fish after the low water levels last year. Later J

I think Condie is toast for a while, but Weston had plenty of fish and water in it still when I last fished it on Halloween. Winder also had a really healthy amount of water in October as did Treasureton. I drove past Condie, Treasureton and Foster a couple of weeks ago, and they were all full or nearly full. I heard Twin was full too which is a relief after they drained the south lake for dam work. I think it will be okay. If this year is dry too, then we'll be in some serious trouble though [frown]

Good news on the water levels up there. Hope the fish numbers will hang in there. I've seen lots of winter kill this year so I hope that won't hurt too bad. Thanks again for the info. J

I hope not. A little thinning could be a good thing for the quality of the fish, but mass winter kill would make me regret spending $100 on a license. Where have you been seeing winter kill, and what species have you noticed. Trout I don't worry as much because they grow so much faster than the warm water species around here.

Been seeing dead crappie and sunfish floating in Benson. Later J

I see. Hopefully it has to do with how shallow Cutler is and the Idaho places will be okay. It does intrigue me though. I would think right now would be a good time to chase catfish at Cutler with all that food in the water.

That's what I was thinnin' that the Cats'll mop that mess up pretty quick. Hmm - might be a good time to float some frozen minnows!

Now I'm torn. I was going to go fly fish for trout tomorrow, but Cutler is sounding more and more interesting [:/] Decision, decisions.

Hey Yote got my toon put together tonight with the motor and took it for a ride in my irrigation pond. It even works so now I need to get it licensed and try a float. It should be nice. Later J

I drove past Newton tonight on the way home. 10-30ft of open water with a big crack down the middle where the lake narrows. The ice that is remaining looks very rotten and soft. It shouldn't be long.

Thanks for the update. Probably open by next weekend for both Hyrum and Newton. Maybe toon time around the edges tomorrow. Thanks later J
