I managed to get out and get some fishing in, despite the wind. Caught my first Carp on my flyrod. It's pretty crazy how hard they fight! Can't wait to hook into one of the bigger ones.

Carp might be ugly but they know how to put up some of the best fights. Definetly makes it fun to catch them for that reason. I caught lots of them last year on the LP.

NICE!!!!! And a MIRROR Carp for your first. That is cool. Was that Yuba?
It is only going to get better, so look forward to your adventures. I got out for an hour today, hooked 5 and landed two (bad shoulder). I love it!

It's Gunnison Reservoir. It only takes about five or ten minutes for me to get over there, so I'm hoping I'll be getting after them often. I think I got my pictures mixed up, 'cause that one was from today. This is actually my first, I caught it yesterday.

Carp that have large sporadic scales, are called mirror carp.

Welcome too the fly carp club. It's more fun when you catch a carp next to tons of trees and trying too keep a big carp not getting tangles. After my first battle with a carp gosh my wrist was screaming for keeping that monster away from the trees.
Good job and keep it. [cool]

That second picture looks like a Mirror as well. Larger Scales. The one FFL lover posted is a common.
Snagging can happen when the Carp cluster, but I have been lucky to only snag one or two. What is crazy "is" snagging a 34" carp in the tail. I thought for sure I had loss all my line when it ran. But, I got it, by myself. Trying to net it was fun too.

Thinking about giving this a try, what kind of fly were you using? Hook size? Technique?

I was catching them on prince nymphs, pheasant tails and other bead-headed nymphs. But Fly Goddess and some of the others can give way better advice on carp then I can!

I have caught them on Prince Nymphs and a sinking line too, plus one here and there on other fly patterns like a Hex and a small Crayfish with foam claws, but I have caught hundreds on one special fly. I use a floating and lately, an indicator. It is crazy watching the indicator bob up and down then take off.

Giving "this" a try? what this is that? If there's an attachment, unclick the "inline" and we'll see it.
Yup - I have a compare shot somewhere. Some call the Common Carp "Kings" - typically small, regular pattern scales. The "Mirror" have larger, glassy looking scales, typically irregular, and commonly many are missing. Some even look naked along their sides.
Tyler - even though I've seen FGs sign. fly - I about did that too! Tricks the fish with 'em, and tricks the fishermen too! She's good!
It's a different game when you can't "steer" the fish by it's mouth.
What weight of tippet do ya'll tend to use on Carps? Do you tend to strip line, or let it hang so they can just slurp it up? Bugelmouths! Hope you kissed that fish!!!
