A week at lake POWELL
#1
Getting your tan on..
Oh yes, Powell what a lake.. Just think?? If the water goes up five feet its one lake and then when it drops its a hole new lake..

We went to Powell to fish the Bullfrog open, and fish we did..
The first look at my lake (and yes it is mine[Wink]) my hart give a little flutter to think of all the fun I am about to have...

The water looked like glass at first site and the water temp was 57 myself and Don headed for what we knew was a good looking bed area for the bass..
And beds we did find all over the lake..

To fish a tournament of this size or any other you need a game plain, so we made ours..One that could go wrong in many ways, like wind cold fronts and much more..We did not know how many other teams of fisherman would be there..But we knew we needed a plain..
With all the beds we knew we had to find beds with bass on them that was 3 lb or bigger and weigh at least five bass each day for over 15lb bag limit or better..

We had three days to look, the first day we found 19 beds with bass that looked to be at leased 3lb each fish..Day two we found only 11 but two looked to be 4lb to 5lb, each one we marked on the GPS and the size as well, oh yes we had to keep just looking but did not cast a hook or lure at them.. That was the hard part..

We would catch some of the under size looking bass to check our size guesses and most of the time we was with in a pound..
By the end of day 3 we had over 35 beds found (we was hoping for more..Then we went to the tournament meeting and found out that there was 84 teams to be fishing..
We guessed that maybe over half of the beds would or have been found by other fisherman, and only at best only half of the ones we could fish on tournament days would bite..
The first day we got a limit in the first hour but all but one was under 3lb but now we could just work the beds we found..
The first day did not go as planed we only got 5 bass for only 12.80lb ..We had a lite wind and could not see most beds..But we was in 15 place with our biggest fish at 4 1/2 lb..

This is a picture of one of the hide-holes canyons we would go in to..
This canyon went back about one mile..

Day two and last day we headed out to fish or find the other beds we could not get to the first day..With all the running around and fishing I forgot to take more pictures of what I planed on but will post what I did take..
Day two of the tournament started out bad we could not get the fish to bite on the same baits as the days before and most of the beds we looked at the fish were gone..

We went in one cove and could see a bass that looked about 6 to 7 lb but not on a bed.. we put or worked numbers of lures and on many tries the bass would swim over to the lure and put its nose about an inch from the lure then turn away..No we could not get that one but we got our last bass of the day at 3:00pm (we had to be in at 4:00pm) and ended the day and tournament with another bag of 12.98lb ..

The last flight of tournament fisherman was to come in at 5:30pm and would not say who won till 6:30pm and we or Don had to work the next morning so we headed home..

Fish we caught:
Bass large and smallmouth over 50 per day of tournament..
We also got walleye, Crappie biggest one 16.5" Striped bass, blue gill (as big as your hand) and I did bring back a bag of walleye and one of crappie..

The boat ramp at Bullfrog is a killer to walk up in the 80 and 90 temps we had at the end of the day...

But what a day or days we had..

Sounds like fun.

Are you still driving your boat backwards? Or did you get those cables connected correctly?

left the jinx at home, eh? Not a bad plan. Hopefully that bad mojo-juju will wear off and you can enjoy more fishing time from your boat, and fewer forward/reverse mishaps!

headed to Powell over Mother's Day -- you going to be on the water to give me a hand finding some fish? Or will I have to go find them myself?

My family and I also went to Powell last weekend. First time to the lake and had moderate success. We stayed at the Campground in spot 25 Friday and Saturday, there were two gentlemen in the slot next to us with a Triton, and a slide-in camper. Was that you? We were in a toyhauler with a 183 blue Champion. There were lots of boats fishing the tournament, most seemed to go north. We fished much closer to Bullfrog and came back with just enough for a good fish fry.

Bassrods, Nice post thanks.

For the 7 pounder that would not bite. Always bring a box of big nightcrawlers. Especially if your fishing real clear water. Thread your crawler on an smaller bait hook tied to some 6# floro. NO weight.

From as far away as you can. Make a real light toss close enough to get her attention, but not right on her head.

If if she shows any attention at all just let your crawler free fall to bottom, and just let it set there.. If she does not take it right away be patient. She will come back.

Ofcoares some people are adverse to these types of technique. But for me and a 7 pounder it is a no brainer.

Fishing beds IS fun. But that is one reason they need to re-stock more bass in Utah right.[Wink]
