So I am training my son how to cast artifical lures. He was able to cast spinners and jigs without to mutch issue. We tied on a rapalla yesterday and there seemed to be to many hooks for him to handle. The hook on the belly just kept getting in the way and tangling with the line. If I take the belly hook off the repalla, will that screw up the action of the lure? I would like to do that for him till he gets a little better at his casts.

depends on what kinda rap. suspending raps it will mess it up for sure, those things are touchy and weighted perfectly for them to suspend.

I found a Lucky Craft (suspending) that had been in the water a while. Took both of the rusty hooks off of it and replaced only the tail hook. It still catches fish, just doesn't suspend very well.

It is a floating rapalla. I was just worried about the action. We fish mantua a lot and I want it to stay above the weeds in the summer. My son is working on casting but his retreive is not always the most consistant. He needs somthing that wont sink into the weeds if he has slows down or stops.

I wouldn't worry about it than, suspending ones or glide baits are the touchiest but floating ones that are straight cast and retrieve aren't an issue. even suspending ones still have the same good action but if you actually want them to suspend they won't.

Taking the middle hook off most baits will not affect them much. On your suspending baits, if you take the hook off, put a Storm suspend dot or strip on to maintain the balance from the factory. You can also use these to make a suspending bait from a floating bait. You can also use lead wire around the middle hook to weight a floating bait to suspend.
