Trolling for Macks at the Gorge ... Questions
#1
When it comes to mackinaw fishing at the Gorge, my preferred style has always been vertical jigging. But when the bite starts to slow later in the day and I become quite fatigued, maybe some trolling for macks would be a relaxing way to finish up the day. After all, there is still plenty of daylight left between the time I get tired and when the sun goes down.

So here are my questions: What are some good lures to try pulling behind my poor-man's down-rigger (Luhr Jensen Jet Diver) and how fast would you recommend I troll?

I know mike personally and have some of his lures. A great friend of Tarpojim's also. They are pricey, but effective.

Coot, your going to need to get a downrigger if your serious. Period!

Trolling for kokes or rainbows might be a more "relaxing way to finish up the day." More productive too. And easier due to lighter gear. And no rows of giant treble hooks to be engulfed in the gills and throat of a 30-year-old laker you could catch and release the next morning. Just a thought.

From what I have learned about trolling for macks you need to get it down close to the bottom and that in no way is relaxing! Trolling for big macks at the gorge is stressfull if the bottom changes much. Good luck

Trolling for Mayan cichlids at full speed with two trolling motors (bowmounts) very relaxing!

I have always trolled for macs but with steel line and it is in know way relaxing but what i would recommend is get the biggest pop gear you could find and put either a whole chub or a rappala type lure. I have not had too much trouble with releasing fish and i have caught them with the big hooks on flatfish. The fishing behind a down rigger is not as fast but it does work.

That thread was a very interesting read. Especially Jim's point of view. Thanks for sharing.

Jim, currently I got no desire to troll for bows or kokes. The big boys are what makes me happy. But I have yet to kill a Gorge mac and cringe at the thought of it. So maybe I'll just relax back at the motel. [cool]

You can troll single-hook stuff (spoons, plugs,) or even one-treble lures too, like a Flatfish with the front hook removed. Just be careful about those big swim baits and plugs with trebles all over the place (2 or 3).
