New to Scofield & Red Fleat
#1
In two week, Im taking my family camping to Scofieldd and taking our boat. We might ride up to Redfleet as well. I have never been there and want my kids to catch some fish. Does anyone have any advice on how to fish those reservoirs?

Don't forget that Red Fleet is on the list of waters that require you to decontaminate your boat before you can launch anywhere else.

Did Memorial weekend at Red Fleet. Beautiful, like a mini Lake Powell, without all the houseboats.

It's holding Largemouth, gills, walleye and trout. I was targeting largemouths and was all over the lake in my kayak casting everything at rock structure but no luck.

Got back after a 4 hr early morning jaunt across to the less populated arms of the lake, and my camp neighbor says a guy was hauling 'em in one after another, right under the swim platform off the beach near camp!!

Geez! Well I needed the exercise anyways.

Ranger said guys were pulling in walleyes off a couple of rocky points by jigging off the bottom with a worm added for flavor. He also told me the DWR was planning on killing off the lake next year to make it exclusively a trout fishery.

Kind of a bummer for me as I go to a desert lake for warmwater species. I can catch trout just about anywhere, but good bass lakes are harder to come by.

Great lake, uncrowded(even Memorial wknd!), nice facilities and ramp. But I doubt I'll go that far again just to catch cutthroat if they follow through with that plan next year. I'd love to hit it again this year though.

Sounds fun! Thanks for the report. I've heard there's a lot of Bluegill in Scofield that are easy to catch for the kids. Do you know if you just fish for them with a bobber and a worm?

Are you sure you're not talking about Steinaker. Scofield is about 2hrs from Vernal. Red Fleet and Steinaker are 10 minutes apart. Bass and bluegill are pretty easy to find on Steinaker.

Steinaker is where I'd take my kids.

Just a suggestion.

If the lake level is high, just put the worm and bobber next to the brush anywhere you find it and there should be bluegills. They should be easy to spot, might even be spawning still. The bass wont' be far away from the gills. If the water is down find whatever structure you can and bluegills should be in 7ft of water or less.

If the bobber doesn't seem to work, then go to a drop shot rig with a 1/2 a night crawler. Simple, but extremely effective on bluegill.

Just so you don't travel far and find different conditions than you are hoping for, Steinaker is low enough that there is little to no flooded brush. The water has been rising but still hasn't reached the brush line as of about a week ago. I haven't been past Red Fleet lately to know water conditions there.

Steinaker has rainbow trout, largemouth bass and bigger bluegill than Red Fleet. I've done well trolling for trout along the shorelines. For bluegill I have done great finding little shoreline pockets with brush but with the low water this year they may be in different areas. The cove north of the boat ramp my be good to try for bass and bluegill. Admittedly I haven't done enough bass fishing there to make any good suggestions.

Red Fleet has gazillions of bluegill but few larger than 7". As mentioned before it also contains LM bass, rainbows and walleye. I've heard it has smallmouth bass too but I have yet to catch one there. I would concentrate on the bays south of the boat ramp for bluegill and bass in 5 to 15 ft of water. For trout go out to the mouth of the bays in 20 to 35 ft.

Both lakes are good fisheries.
