I was reading this magazine article the other day about a guy who jumped out of his boat to get his rod that went flying into the water. He had to swim back to his boat, but he caught a 15 lb brown.
So, what is the craziest thing you've done for a fish?
Today, I did the craziest thing I've done for a fish. I was fishing at Strawberry with two poles. While I was chucking a spoon, I looked over to see my bait pole bent over. I picked it up to set the hook, but it felt like a snag. Then something started fighting hard on the other end. I'm thinking "crap my line is wrapped around some weeds".
So I walk out without paying much attention, and walk too far and water fills my rubber boots. Oh well. I try to work the line free from different angles, but it's not working. I had to go back to shore cause my feet were starting to get cold, and to take my boots off. Then I get the brilliant idea to walk out further and see if I can get closer to the weeds. So I wade out in my clothes and I get a glimpse of the fish out there, laying on the bottom.
I then decide to get my net and see if I can scoop him. Back out again, but my net is not long enough. Each time I wade in I have to go back out cause of the cold water. Finally I wade out even further (about chest deep), and I am barely able to touch the rainbow with the tip of my 7 ft rod. Luckily, that worked and he broke free from the weeds, and I pulled him in. All for this 18 inch rainbow. I guess it was worth it, cause I really wanted him for dinner tonight, lol.

Heres my crazy stupid stories. while working as a deckhand on sportboats off L.A. CA. Had on some good poleroids glass.i was try to point out to the customers the yellowtail swimming next the boat but they could not see them. So I grabbed a gaff and free gaffed a 12# yellow swimming by pulled it into the the boat dropped it on the deck and said right there. I ended up with high count 14 yellows caught ( free gaffed ) that day
Now my stupid story year later I'm in sam diego tuna fishing. Hear a story of a deckhand free gaffing a 100# plus tuna. Story goes head gaff em as its coming up and pull up hard and it will push itself right over t he rail. I just had to try that ! And first try worked like a charm. Up and over the rail I pulled over a 150# bigeye tuna. WOO HOO!! Major mistake. That was one hot fish it hit the deck and exploded knocked me and I don't remember how many people down those on there feet ran pissed off alot customers. Boat owner was so mad he fired me. As we were on day 2 of a 5 day trip I was rehired next day and kept on for the season . Lucky no one was seriously hurt [reply][/reply] maybe a story for a later post I,ll tell about the to be close if not over a1000# one I free gaffed !

I have 2.
Bout got shot by a cheff at La Caille restraunt up in Sandy when I was in high school. A buddy and myself hid the truck down the road and went and fished the ponds by the road when you first pull in. Trout would hit like every cast. All I remember is spinners. I never knew I could run that fast.
Next, I swam out to the big ole rock up at East Canyon again back when I was in high school. people were line on shore so we swam out there. Caught 2 limits and hooked them to my waist and headed back to shore. almost drowned and last the fish on a metal stringer.
So 2 crazy stories about trout fishing. [#0000BF]Deleted[/#0000BF] was I thinking. I dont even like to eat slimers. I like to catch anything, bet seriously dumb.
Cheers. I have been eating walleye 2 or 3 times a week for the last couple of weeks. Now there a fish worth the greef, just saying.

Well last January I snow shoed into electric lake. The snow was only 4 feet deep but the top foot was fluffy powder. I pulled the ice sled, ice shelter and auger in with me. What a hard learned lesson that was. The high temperature that day was 2 below and when I arrived it was 13 below. I couldn't feel my toes or fingers for a couple hours after getting back to the truck. I was very lucky to not get frost bite. The fishing was fantastic and I caught around 60 fish that day. Looking back now that wasn't the best idea I have had.

I've actually done the same crazy thing twice. The first time was at Newton several years ago. My buddy and I had had a great morning fishing muskies before it slowed down. We decided to troll back to the ramp and take a little break. My buddy was driving, so I put his rod out first with a lure that he'd been killing them on all morning. I had turned to the other side of the boat to put my rod out when I heard some noise from the other side and turned just in time to see his rod going overboard. I didn't think, I just reacted, and dove for it. I got it on the first swipe with my hand as Mike circled the boat back to pick me up. When I got back in the boat he commented that it was almost a very expensive day for me, implying that I had knocked the rod in the water. I told him that I wasn't near the rod when it went in. We figure that a musky must have hit the lure moments after I got it out, and hit so hard that it took the rod out of the holder! See pic 1.
The second time around I was fishing with Clint B. at Pineview in the early AM. We had fish around some weeds for awhile with no action. I decided to slow things down and put on a twitch bait. I made my cast to the weed edge, and as soon as it hit the water I gave it a twitch without even thinking about it. I was totally unprepared when this musky freight trained it and took the rod right out of my hands! Again, I just dove for it. I grazed it on the first swipe with my hand, but got ahold of the butt on the second swipe. I swam over to the boat and handed it to Clint who proceeds to tell me that "the fish is still on". I asked him to crank on it and keep pressure on while I climbed back in the boat. Once aboard, Clint handed the rod to me and I fought the fish to the net. The whole time Clint is trying to keep from laughing, not sure of how I'd react. Once it was clear that I was quite amused by the whole thing, he started laughing too ;0) The cool thing is that we got most of it on video! Even though it was August, it was still pretty cool in the morning so I had to strip out of my wet clothes and put on what dry clothes that I could find in the boat. My phone was toast, but it was a lot cheaper than the rod and reel! The fish that forced me to jump was a fat 34"er (pic 2) I later caught a 38" (pic 3) that day and had my only two fish day there for that year. It was quite the memorable trip [:p] Fred K.

Loved the story about you jumping in the boat after the muskie..You never know how big of a fish it is, if it rips the rod out of your hand. Speaking of toasting phones, mine was in my pocket and got destroyed also. It was a nice touch screen too. Didn't realize til later, and felt dumb about it. But I didn't want to risk losing the fish. By the way my pole was bent down I thought it might be a 10 pounder or something, haha. Good times.

Anymore the first thing that I do when I get on my boat is to put my keys, wallet and phone in the glove box just in case I have to go swimming again [ ] Fred K.

An old fishing buddy always said to me before we launched "spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch". In memory of him I always check to make sure I have my sunglasses, change of clothes if needed, put my wallet in the glove box and my phone is my watch and it goes in there as well.
Craziest thing I've ever done for a fish? Back when I was slightly more daring I sneaked into some private land so I could fish on a pond that had monster brookies in it...the owner was later put in prison for two murder convictions. There's a lot to be said about hindsight.

Fished a walleye tourny in 50mph sustained winds. Had the 150 runnin and I was on the 82pound thrust bow mount at full speed just to stay in one spot. Caught some good fish though! Lost my hat, sunglasses, and anything else that wasnt superglued down[crazy]. The wind was blowing strait into the ramp, so it was the first time my boat was uncontrolably forced on the trailer. Some other boats werent so lucky and wound up on the shore side ways. Looking back on it, probably shouldnt have launched that morning....[fishin]

I was a little boy fishing from the boat at dock at the Broadwater Marina in Biloxi, Mississippi with just string and a hook and saved fried oysters from dinner. The fish kept taking my bait and I didn't have much left, so I changed from a hook to a mousetrap and lowered the baited mousetrap into the water and caught a fish right away.
