I've noticed especially with bows is they they'll go through a cycle of bright spawning colors to pure silver. They'll start get their color back first in the gill path and then the rest of the body will get some color. All the other trout seem to do the same thing but they don't lose their spots only the brilliant colors from spawning. I guess thats why some people have a hard time with identification of different trout.
The best way to id a trout is the basic markings, starting with the tail then spots or color around the spots, fin markings such as white lines or black lines, patterns of color. For cuts the best way it pattern of spots and how many and where they are located on the fish.
Hope this helps.
