Uintas with a surprise
#1
Me and the girlfriend decided to hit up the uintas again on Saturday. We got to Butterfly around 9:50 after getting stuck behind a bike race. She caught three fish, a tiger and two rainbows on a black jakes. I caught two tigers and one rainbow on a hi-vis parachute adams, a griffiths knat and a grey wulff. We then decided to go to Mirror where she stayed and caught another rainbow then took a nap. So I decided to try the river and I was rewarded. I caught 6 tigers and 4 rainbows on a royal wulff, lightning bug nymph and a rainbow warrior nymph. After we drove down to Trial and started nailing tigers and rainbows on Gulp Minnows. After about 40 fish between the both of us I decided to break out the 2 weight again and the fun started. I tied on a size 16 double renegade and on the fourth cast I got a nice surprise and a first for me...a Grayling [Smile] It was about 12" and gorgeous. I caught two more after him both about 12". I heard of them being in there but never of anyone catching them in there. We ended up with a 60+ fish day including three grayling.

Nice grayling.Sounds like a perfect day in the Unitas. I have that rod TFO 6ft 2wt rod as well .How do you like it? Pretty good rod even if just a touch slower action than I'm used to.

Its my first weight drop since I have been fly fishing, from a 5 to a 2, its a pretty good rod. I had to get used to it but I think I've got it down now.

Good luck! If you do all types of fishing try a 3" Gulp Minnow in Smelt on a 1/8 or
1/16 oz darter jig head in chartreuse or pink.

Nice! Sounds like you went through a lot of different flies, but it paid off big time.

Yeah I sure did. Kinda just wanted to see what they would and would not hit on. When I fished the river they were even hitting on a bee pattern that I bought at FishTech.

The action of that 2 wt is a bit different than any other rod I have but not too hard to adapt my casting to.
I got stuck in that bike race last year. It was snowing above 10,000 ft a bit and felt sorry for some of the slower ones stopped by the side of the road trying to warm up.
So was there anything you used that didn't actually produce fish?

The only fly I used that didnt produce a fish was a Batman nymph. And a Maniac Minnow but other than that it was fish on like every other cast.

Nice! It's good to hear of grayling showing up again, especially in waters that don't require much hiking.
