Bumper Crop for Indianas State Hatcheries
#1
What a difference a year makes. During last year's record spring heat and prolonged drought, Indiana's state fish hatcheries struggled with their annual assignments to produce fish for stocking public waters. This year the cooler spring conditions have been ideal for hatchery operations. Walleye fingerling and hybrid striped bass (wiper) production is off the charts. Production for largemouth bass, channel catfish and the walleye-sauger hybrid (saugeye) has also gone well.

Some walleye lakes are stocked each year with newly hatched fry in April and others receive 1-2" pond-reared fingerlings in June. All the fry and fingerling sites were successfully stocked this year and over 500,000 fingerlings were released into Lake Monroe near Bloomington.

"This is the first time in the past 13 years that the stocking goal has been surpassed at Monroe," says Dan Jessup, manager of the state's Cikana Hatchery at Martinsville. "It's been a great fish production year so far."

Future fishing also looks bright for Indiana's hybrid striped bass anglers. Most hybrid striped bass sites received double stockings and surplus fish were released into the Ohio River near Newburgh.
