Pocatello to Chesterfield

Just wondering if anyone drives over the mountain from Pocatello to get to Chesterfield reservoir.

Looking on google maps it looks like from Fort Hall take Simplot Rd and a couple other roads will take you around the north side of Mt Putnam and then drive south to the reservoir.

Is this faster than going down through Lava? It looks like quite a shorter distance but not sure if it is more time efficient. Also what are the road conditions like?

All dirt roads the whole way. Faster to go to Lava. One wrong blink and you will find yourself at Blackfoot Res. instead. At least from I.F. its dirt.

One option is taking Rich Ln in Blackfoot out to chesterfield. It is about 41 miles but takes about an hour and a half due to road conditions and cattle everywhere.
As a fyi I just went yesterday and towed my boat along. The water was pretty low and a ton of weeds which made trolling a joke. Never got a bite, but I only tried spoons, rapalas, and spinners. Maybe flies would have done better, but the other 2 boats I saw said they never touched a fish either.

How was the stretch of Portneuf/Presto between Lonepine Rd and the Reservoir. When I was there in the spring it was the worst section. Thanks

I had a pretty similar experience last Saturday trolling in my kayak. The water is very warm and green and hard to judge how high the weeds come up in certain areas. Didn't seem to correlate with depth on the finder. Had one hook up on pop gear on the east side. My dad, who likes to take it easy just soaking some bait from shore had much more success. Caught and released a few, had one large one take the drag to the limit and finally broke off at the leader (for which he blamed me for supplying him with cheap line[mad]) and ended up taking one home at 21" for the barbie. Nothing too spectacular but tasted great.

I'm not the most experienced fishing Chesterfield but I've noticed there are a plethora of leeches. I might consider sinking some fly patterns just above the weeds next time I go.
