Hit the river/puddle about 7:15AM in the toon again, love that little thing.... Anyway first five fish couldn't land, they kept spitting it out... So I changed lures and finally went to catching smallies...
[inline IMG_2485.JPG]
Then a few LMB and more smallies and even a double...
[inline IMG_2490.JPG]
I even got a few nice slabs on the day...
[inline IMG_2505.JPG]
I even caught my best smallie of the year today, weighed in at 1.82 lbs... Thought it would be bigger, but that's what the scale said, unless it was on KG's...
[inline IMG_2498.JPG]
Oh I did get a cat to mix in there as well...
[inline IMG_2501.JPG]
Ended up with 27 fish today, 1 cookie cutter, 3 crappie, 5 LMB and the rest were SMB... Fun morning lots of aerials and lost at least 9 that were close to the net but couldn't close the deal... Took a few home for lunch, man I love fish tacos...
[inline IMG_2512.JPG]
Anyway I hope this isn't too boring, but I sure had fun and like to tell the story... Later J

I really need to give that place a chance. I keep heading to Idaho, but it looks like there's a good variety of fish willing to play out there, and it's closer to home.

I think all the good stuff out here came from Oneita. Problem with Cutler is they don't hang in the same spot and one day you find them and the next few you get skunked. I was really lucky today, probably my best day in years. But I do like close. Next weekend we're going on a flotilla down the canyon I hope it will be good next week. Don't remember if you were going to come, but if you do, it would be great to meet ya. Catch ya later J

I would love to go explore that area, but I'll probably be stuck going to Salt Lake (blah) for some family stuff.

The fishing will always be there and the family may not. Take time to enjoy them and we'll fish when we can. Later J

True words there, oh wise angler. True words indeed!
Today was NOT your day to live up to your name! Fine fine, encouraging outing! Those are some fine fish there Jeff! That slabbo had to be at least a footlong, more? I can hear the oil sizzle, nice bag. Always live finding the variety mix, but it sounds like you cornered a pod of smallies.
I definitely gotta get some time out there before the "work" begins! Most definitely looking forward to next weekend, I'm all hands on deck for certain.

I seem to have a boat jinx going on lately. I took the scouts out boarding and tubing the other night and my steering cable broke so I may be running with the trolling motor next week. Should be okay for that trip and we'll want to fish on the way anyway. I just need to find some minnows so I can catch some cats. Need to get back to Sportsmans and get those heavy bottom bouncers. Anyway looking forward to the trip. Later J

Hey Curt thanks for the kind words and I forgot my tape so I didn't measure the crappie this time, but I suspect they were 11 to 12" range, they seemed like nice sized fish and even fought like a big fish so I was surprised to see they were crappie when I got them to the boat... I caught a really nice crappie last week and when I measured it, I was surprised it only measured a little over 11" so two of these were in the same size class as that one and the other was probably 9 to10" it was a bit smaller...
Next weekend is the flotilla on Saturday, we will launch at the Cache Junction Launch between CJ and Newton... then head down the canyon towards Cutler Dam... I'm thinking the big cats might have moved into that deeper water plus the walleye are missing too, so I'm hoping they are down there as well... And the bass and crappie are along the edges now so we can probably pick them up on the way down..... Did you decide if you are going to come, if you don't want to take your boat and don't mind 3 in a boat you can come with Yote and I in my beater boat... We'll throw out more details as it gets closer, but thinking of maybe doing a fish fry on the island where you can fry your catch and put them in fish taco's... Got some good fresh tomatoes and Jalapeno's from the garden that make a pretty good fixen mix on the tacos... Anyway let us know your plans... Thanks Jeff

I wanted to give it a try and thought if the guys I fished with last time could not make it, then I might take you up on your offer, or if Rod had an extra seat, maybe I'd ride with him but he might be bringing his wife[:/].

Thanks, I'm not sure I'm in love with the slow picture loading everytime... I may need to use smaller size pictures from now on... How do you and your brother get your posts to behave? Seems like you guys do a great job with your posts and it sure makes it more fun to read...
I guess I've got to figure out a different way to reduce the picture size this didn't work... Anyway thanks and catch ya next time... J

Curt, you're more than welcome on my boat. The wife doesn't want to be around all that testesterone so it will just be me. Just need a launch time and are we doing a pot luck lunch?
Jeff looks like you're the man in charge.

Rod,
How does 7:00AM sound for meet up time at the CJ launch? Also I thought I'd bring the camp chef grill and dutch oven and some taco fix'ens like tortilla's and cabbage and a tomatoe/jalapeno/lime/cilantro type mix to add on... and what ever everyone else would like to bring would be great... we'll set up on the island and let people drop in and cook their fish and BS... Hope the weather will be nice and fish will bite... Later J

That sounds great, I'll ask my wife if she will whip something up to go with fish tacos.
See everyone there.

Rod, I'll take you up on your offer, where do you want me to meet you at?
Jeff, I'm still getting some stuff out of my garden that I could bring but it sounds like so are you. Zuccini and lemon cucumber, a few Asian cucumbers and onions are mainly what I have. If any of that would help, I'd be glad to bring them or aything else we might need.

Curt,
I had an onion failure year, if you wouldn't mind bringing some diced onions, that would be great... Also anything else you like on the tacos would be great... Plus we need you to catch some fish to fry up as well... I'm thinking your Willard walleye techniques will work down this canyon plus some jig casting... Got to run, Later J

Not a problem Jeff, it was a decent onion crop for us, so we have plenty, plus I can bring some eye filets, if that would help?

Curt, we can meet at the boat launch south of Newton. It's free parking and not much farther for you. I talked my wife into making black bean and corn salsa.
