Rod Building Questions
#1
Looking to start building some spinning and fly rods this winter. I'm new to this and have some questions to anyone that has experience. I can ask on the thread or PM to anyone who would like to help me out with basic information to get started. I know the internet has tons of information on this, but I'd rather get advice from everyone on here that I can get into detail with. Thanks to all.

Hit us with some questions, I've built a couple dzn fly and switch rods, mostly on sage blanks and several steel head and salmon casters on multiple manufactured blanks.

Not sure what you need. I know you want local advise .... On ......?

Rodger at Portneuf Outfitters sometimes has classes, and he has many of the materials too.

On the Internet Mudhole is a good resource:

These guys have lots of materials, tools, and how to:

Good luck! You will love using a rod you built.

+1 on what cpierce posted. Mudhole is who most of the rod builders use for materials and is a great resource.

I started about 10 yrs ago with a cabelas kit = blank, guides, thread, glue, reel seat, handle etc. and the flex cote hand wrapper, a cheap dryer motor kit, and a set of reamers. I still use all of it. and my lathe for turning my own handles.

I actually buy tons of stuff off ebay, like closeout blanks and obsolete sage blanks. I've done 3 zAxis rods this year in 4 pc 10 ft , in 4wt, 6wt & 8wt all with Whitetail antler handle, butt-cap and reel-seat with nickel silver fittings & tch single foot guides. I only paid $185 for each blank set and picked up a half dzn of them.

youtube and goggle have helped tons as well, but not as much as the guys on the rod building forum on ifish.net

Mostly just advice on actual materials a person needs to build a basic fly or spinning rod. I've looked online and it seems like every kit has different components which makes me think some of them are charging for items a person doesn't really need.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll run up to Portneuf River Outfitters and pick their brains a bit then once I get to know what I'm doing a little bit I'll order a bit more from mudhole.

You might be interested in the blanks that are mentioned in this post:

Looking at the RDP site, the blanks seem quite reasonable, and Riverdog likes his.
