Took a run over to the lower Bear - was hoping I might find some kitties, but I spent more time chasing Bass and taunting the young Sunfish and Bluegills. Water's low and going down. Not sure what happens below when they open for the drawdown.

The smallie took my jig right on the drop, and I thought I'd hit a rock, then it ran. It did that a lot! I did have some interest on my Cat-pole, and someone kept taking little runs with my bait, but wouldn't really commit.

Saw quite a bit of die off, some cats, lots of carp, and some shad - even had a ailing shad swim by. Reminded me of the ailwives from Lake Michigan days.

Along Valley View, stopped by an access point, and noted this sign posted. Thought it interesting information. Guess watch out come October! Sounds like it could drop pretty fast! Wonder what exactly counts as "artifacts"? Lost lures? Anchors, Paddles - hey - if you find half a minnow trap - it's mine!

Ya know - I actually had the fly rod in hand, even got a new reel setup. But it was SO danged windy! I was actually tucked back behind a big rock to shield.
I think the little guys were into black. Had a number chasing my black swivel more than the jig!

Good for you John, nice looking bass. As far as artifacts go, I'm sure they are talking about Indian artifacts, they are all over the place in that area.

Curt, I'm pretty sure you are correct about the artifacts, there are several indian camps with pottery and flint scattered across the beaches... Later J

Yea, that whole area has a lot of indian artifacts, from Culter to Willard. Every time they talk about doing any work in that whole area they need special permits from the BIA and that is one of the reasons they never built the Dam in the Honeyville area years ago.

I think they should have warned about quick sand and getting stuck in the mud more than boating hazards because it will be so shallow even airboats will have a tough time to operate. Pretty sure my pontoon will be limited to occasional deeper spots. I hear they are pulling it down 15' at the dam, so the only water left behind will be the natural rivers flow across the mud flats. I hope I can get out again before the big drop, but it doesn't look likely. Catch ya later. J

With that mandated draw down, you can go walk out and get that really nice yellow anchor I lost out there a couple of years ago. [ ]

Well, I've only been out once, but caught plenty. I caught a largemouth on my first cast out here in Tennessee, and 3 casts later, landed a nice smallmouth. That day I also managed some bluegill and black perch. Probably caught a dozen or more. Spent most of the time wading up the river in between holes. Did more of that than fishing, but had to do it to get to the nicer holes. I am hoping to go after some muskie here next month. There's a river right up the road from me that has plenty of them. Finally got my boat registration sent in, so I should be able to hit some of the smaller rivers and coves on the lakes around here.

Good deal, glad your getting out but it must be tough, with all the fishing you did while you were here in Utah. What do Black perch look like?

The pic I have isn't the best. The one in the pic was smaller. Most of the ones we caught that day were 10+ inches (black perch, that is). They have a body shape similar to that of the green sunfish that Coyotespinner has a pic of. But they are a darker color and have red eyes.

I have heard them called rock bass as well. That's what they are called in MN anyway. They like to hit just about anything and put up a good fight, that one you have is a good sized one. Nice catch.

Yep - that's what I have always referred to them as. A lot of hugs here call them rock perch, whether it's the right name or not. Every time I've talked with my friends about fishing the small rivers here, that's what they refer to them as, and now I'm just so used to hearing it. But they are fun to catch. I was catching them on a 4-inch plastic lizard.
