Best day on the berry
#1
Had an awesome day on the berry today. Between 7 of us on the boat we landed 120. All were released except a few bows that were invited to dinner. All were caught on white tub jigs tipped with worm or minnow.

Oh yeah! That's what I like to hear! I'm heading out there on Monday hope all is still well then. Is there any particular place you went?

Were you on a pontoon in the bay to the right of the Strawberry marina? Water was dead calm for us from 9 to 1. I think a little chop would have put higher numbers in the catch rate. I watched them swimming around about 3' deep. If I can see them, they can see me[laugh]
When we left, air temp was 68 degrees. I am betting Monday will be much different! About half that temp. Could be better or worse. Let us know but I am kinda thinking snow in the mix.

I must be doing something wrong because although I hear about everyone slaying it near renegade, I never really got anything there. Do you fish directly east of the ramp at renegade or north of the boat ramp, or northwest? Jigging or trolling tube jigs? Also, what's best? Worms or chub meat or minnows to tip you tube jig hook? Thanks for the pointers!

No problem. The hardest thing is getting it figured out the first time. After that you'll be saying to yourself man I wish I would have known it was that easy. We fished east of the ramp. We picked our spot Saturday due to the fish we saw rising.

We were in about 30 to 40 feet of water. We were using a 3.5 inch white flaked tube jig with an 1/8 oz jig. We like to put on about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch piece of worm and try to slide it partially into the tube, then put a small piece of minnow on. This way when the minnow falls off you still have the worm giving off some sent.

Toss it out and let it sink for a second varing the time to get the depth need to get to the fish.

Then start a slow retrieve back. Don't jig it. If any movement is needed just a 18 inch pull of the rod and the let it fall again as you real down. The bite is light. If you don't hook it then just let the jig sit still and a lot of the time they will keep hitting it.

My boy likes to just cast out 15 or so feet and the let it sit still till it's right under the boat he caught 12 yesterday doing this.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hey I'm pretty sure I talked to you Saturday. I was with my roommates in a black Altima and you gave us a tip of somewhere less crowded to go since the shore was pretty packed. Sound familiar?

My best is still coming from the same depth, but I am using a fast retrieve and the bite dang near pulls the rod out of my hand.
I fished several different lines for different depths and caught fish on all at different points of the day.
So be ready to adjust, they will be moving not only forward , but up and down.
And I was catching in 19' to 42' with many more in the 35' area and a Type III.
Fly fishing however for any of you that want to give it a try[Wink]

Best Day at the Berry,
I am not surprised at your success. Where on the lake were you fishing and what techniques were you using?

We hit the area east of the marina. I couldn't believe how many boats and fisherman there were in that bay.
We only got 4 slot cuts and fished for 4 hours.

The time of this report, roads were clear with very little snow anywhere.

We do need a current report.

Roads are still clear enough over to Renegade, not enough snow to prevent getting over there. Looks like mid 40's on thursday, and friday . Little breezy on friday.

DeadI,
I apologize. I missed you previous post. I have been trolling with dodgers & night crawlers right on the surface. Maybe down 3 to 4 feet. It seems that is where they are feeding. This technique has produced well for me in Strawberry Bay, Renegade and on the Soldier Creek side up toward the Hwy 40 arm and along the shoreline between the Aspen Grove marina and the entrance to the narrows on the west.
We just moved till we found schools.
How does one go about finding the schools? I was on the Soldier Creek side last Friday, motored around with the big motor for a few miles getting familiar with some underwater structure and points, but rarely had any fish returns on the sonar. Even silently drifting along the shore with the wind did not help us find any schools of fish. Perplexed on how to go about finding them without spooking them off with the gas motor.

Heading out Sat AM in the boat with the wife, and really hoping to put her on a few fish.
