Flasher vs fish finder

I have a HB Piranhamax 160 that I have adapted for ice fishing it works for me.My question is what is the real difference in the two. Flashers vs (boat) fish finders. Is one better then the other or do they work the same. I know the transducer ends are different but that is about all I know. Also what is the difference in the Showdowns as well.
