Palisades reservoir
#1
Has anyone been ice fishing out on paliSades lately? I've been meaning to go that way and was curious about what has been working well. I'd like to try catching some lake trout.

PalaSades anb Ririe are the last two lakes in the area to freeze . I know Ririe is not so I am assuming PalaSades is still open. The first place to freeze up there will be Big Elk cove . If you want more info you can call the Dam Store or Husky Service station .

Fished Big Elk yesterday, decent action on cuts, guys next to us caught some browns. Everyone had a little action. No Kokes. As usual soft at the edges with the water level rising. 6-8 inches of good clear ice where we were. Nice quiet morning until some dogs treed a mountain lion right above the parking area then it was two hours of baying dogs until the hunters caught up.

Thanks for the report. How is the hike off the parking area? I have not heard what the lake level is. Do you know how the access at Blowout looks like? I tried to get on there last year and didn't have a plank with me and never could find a spot after walking around in the deep snow for an hour due to the soft edge and rising water.

Did you hit the Reservoir side or the creek side?

we fished the reservoir side, the hike down is pretty tough,be careful. A guy had ridden a snowmachine in from little elk. I didn't see anyone fishing the creek side of the highway. I did notice water along the edge at blowout but it is like that everywhere on the lake.Nobody was fishing blowout. There was still a good chunk of open water towards the dam.

Do they get big in that area? Like 10 - 20 or bigger? I've seen some pretty big mackinaw.

the biggest I know of was 24lbs caught on the stream side at Big Elk. My biggest out of paliSades is 8lb caught from a boat in Big elk bay and released, should be 10lb by now. There are a few lakers in there and there should be a few bigger ones but I think they are hard to catch and few and far between

Fished PaliSades Monday evening from 3:30 PM until 6:30 PM; did some lantern fishing.
Agreed good for cutts and browns. The hike out is brutal like you mentioned. I know there are many easier places to catch a fish, but for the die hards PaliSades should be pretty good this year[Smile] Open water near the dam was still there Monday evening.

Tuesday morning was slow for me at Big Elk. Soft edges, but good ice under six inches of snow. I was standing in an inch of water by the time i left at 11. Marked a lot of fish, but only a few willing to bite. Only two other anglers on the ice. Very pleasant morning.

Fished by the cliffs just out of the little elk creek cove from about three to five and iced eight fish. Tried a number of different approaches. Jigging seemed to get the browns but only cuts were caught on dead sticks. I even caught a brown at about 50'. I was hoping to get into some Macks but no luck. I lost several fish at that depth so possibly had some on. I had the most success on a white paddle bug tipped with some worm and a little shrimp scent. The seemed pretty good but was a little slushy close to shore. Had to walk a little to find a good spot to walk out. Looks like there is only a small spot of open water out by the dam. Do you guys have better luck getting Macks on the spoons or with jigs?
