I had just one day this week to fish, so I headed to Starvation even though there was a predicted storm. Of course there was no storm in the Starvy area. It was actually one of the best days on the ice this season, overcast and about 25 degrees with very little w**d.
I was alone today since my normal partners were busy or refused to get up early enough to join me. I fished a spot north of the bridge and south of Wyoming. The water was 63 feet deep. My line was in the water at 0617. I didn't see any activity on the Showdown until just before 0700. Two nice perch were the first out of the hole and then I had a hit from their larger cousin. As soon as I set the hook I could tell it was a nice walleye. A heavy fish that didn't fight like a rainbow was the give-away. When it passed under my hole it looked much bigger due to the distortion of the ice and water. It was 23 inches long and nice and fat. It was about the same size as a walleye my brother caught on Monday.
I stayed in the morning area until 1130 and caught a few more decent 10-11" perch. At noon I decided to target the rainbows in an area just south of the bridge. I set up near the third support from the east side in 57 feet of water. It wasn't fast action during the afternoon but I managed to catch five Starvation Steelhead and I invited three healthy 17-18" females (rainbow trout) to a tour of the interior of my Masterbuilt smoker.
It wasn't a banner day, but I enjoyed the nice weather and enough action to keep me tuned in to the Showdown.
